Skykit walked through the forest, searching for some prey. He knew that he shouldn't be here, and his fur bristled at the thought of his mother, Froststorm, finding him here. But he shrugged the thought away. Tasting the air, he tried to find a hint of prey-scent. Just as he thought that he wasn't going to find anything here, he heard a sound, and soon picked up the scent of squirrel.
Froststorm will be so proud! he thought. My first catch, made as a kit! He began to stalk the squirrel, and got ready to pounce. The squirrel heard him just before he landed, and ran up a tree. Green eyes sparking with annoyance, Skykit chased after.
The squirrel had climbed onto one of the higher branches, and Skykit found it hard to climb up after it. How do squirrels make it look so easy? he wondered.
Getting on the branch that the squirrel had, he began to feel really scared. What if the branch falls? What if I can't catch the squirrel? But he still tried, inching closer and closer to the brown mass of fur...
Without warning, the branch under his paws gave way, and he started falling to the ground. But the impact never came. He dared to open his eyes and saw pitch blackness. He had fallen straight through the ground! He was falling and falling, into a bottomless, black, hole. StarClan help me! he wailed in his mind. But he kept falling....

Skykit woke to the sound of teasing voices. "I bet that they're too scared to do anything!"
"Yeah, ShadowClan, you better be!"
Skykit realized that he had been dreaming. The sun was high in the sky, and golden rays warmed his fur. I've slept late again!
"Hey Skykit! Would you like to play with us?" That was Ashkit's voice, sounding happy that he had finally woken up.
"Sure," he replied to Ashkit. "Hey Cloudkit? Do you want to play with us?"
The white tom looked up. "I'm okay," he replied. Skykit sighed. Cloudkit was planning on becoming a medicine cat, and although that didn't mean that he couldn't play rough games with them, he sure acted like it.
"Hey Skykit, catch!" Skykit heard Runningkit's voice, and saw the brown tom hurl a ball of moss at him. Skykit caught it, and threw it to Ashkit.
"Hey look!" Skypaw meowed. The others stopped playing.
"What is it?" they asked.
"Lightpaw's back!"
"So? Hey, let's go play with that big branch!" Skykit stayed where he was.
Don't they want to greet someone who's come back from patrol? Skykit padded up to Lightpaw, who was heading to the apprentices den. "Hi Skykit, what is it?" Lightpaw sounded a little happier than usual.
"I want to know what you did!"
Lightpaw's blue eyes glimmered with amusement. "You ask that every day! Well," she continued on, "today I had my first assessment! Hazelnose said that I did great!" Skykit could see that she was proud.
"I can't wait to become an apprentice!" he said. Lightpaw's eyes glowed with amusement, and she padded away into the apprentices' den.
I'll be an apprentice just tomorrow! he thought excitedly. It'll be so much fun!
