Kailani's P.O.V

Here I am sitting at this party that I don't even want to attend. I was forced by Mia, my best friend, to get out the house for the night. It's around 9 PM and I'm sitting at a desolate table all by myself, wishing I was at home with my nose deep into a book. Mia is the one who insisted that I came to this dumb party. Being the great friend she is, she left me alone to go be with Tyler.

Tyler and Mia have been together since 8th grade. Like any other couple they've had their problems, but I don't think that they can live without each other. Even if they have a really bad argument, I'm 100% positive they'd make up in the end. I glance two tables away from me where the two are laughing and being happy, while I sit by myself, feeling like crap. The deafening and eye-blinding fireworks interrupt my session of feeling sorry for myself. Suddenly someone tapped my shoulder.

Jayce's P.O.V

Being popular in high school has it's pros and cons. The pros you may ask? Obviously one of them is the amazing parties thrown by the other populars. You have so many friends that the list feels endless, and finally? Almost everything goes your way, especially with dating.

The cons now deal with being careful of what you say around other people. You never know who wants to twist your words. My appearance is something I always have to worry about, typically more at parties. Ugh, and the most annoying of all? Having people put you under the stereotype of being mean or bratty.

I looked around at the groups of people talking it up and having a good time. A smile forms on my face when I see my good friend Bryce walking up to me.

"Hey man, Happy 4th of July!" he clinks his red plastic cup on mines and chugs down the rest of whatever was inside.

"4th of July parties are when the hottest girls come out to play. You wouldn't pass up on such offers, would you?" I drink the non-alcoholic punch in the cup that I had.

"Oh I'd never Adams! You know me better than that," he said through a laugh. "What about you Mr. I'd-Rather-Stay-With-One-Girl? Getting laid tonight?"

I'd never really thought about it, but tonight could potentially be one of the best nights of my life. Just as I was about to give an answer to Bryce, fireworks went off and distracted me.

BOOM! PEW PEW!

I looked as they lit up the pitch black sky and followed the smoke as it descended. My entire focus was moved when I saw her. She was so beautiful, far too pretty to be sitting by herself. Her long and curly brown hair did a wave down her back that reminded me of an ocean.

"Uh, hello? Earth to Jayce?"

Suddenly I began to move into the direction of where the girl was, completely ignoring Bryce. Soon enough I was right behind her. I swallowed lightly and tapped her shoulder.

Kailani turns around, her big brown eyes widening a bit as she realizes who it is. She froze not knowing what to say. Jayce Adams, possibly the most popular boy in the entire school, was standing right in front of her and she was completely speechless.

"I was standing over there, and I couldn't help but notice that you were sitting over here by yourself. This is a party, kind of like the official epitome of socializing." He says this taking a seat beside her.

"I uh.. I was kind of forced to come here and then got ditched. So I guess you could say I'm not having the greatest time of my life."

Being the sarcastic and sometimes cocky boy that Jayce is, he responded the way he normally would. "Oh, that sucks." He leaned on the table with his elbow, involuntarily getting closer. "Believe it or not, I've been on both ends of that rope, but it's a good thing that I'm here to keep you company," he said with a wink.
