the things in the night

As night approaches

i greet insomnia like an old friend

the house is quiet and all i hear

is the peaceful breath of those who can sleep

and when i step into the cold air of the night

i wonder who else is up

what things hide in the darkness of the night

and in my pocket is another friend

i light one end and breath in like air i need after suffocation in water

i exhale and i watch the smoke dance in the cold air of the night

as the wind sweeps it up and takes it away

i hear the wind sing as i sit there in the night  closing my eyes

i imagine what  creeps in the shadows of the night as i sit there in peace

as i sit outside

i am not alone

insomnia is my only friend in the night as i lie awake wondering

what things hide in the night.
