Welcome to Let's Learn Bisaya Corner 101:
In which I, the most esteemed feelingon author, will share some of my native languages' vocab that will help you understand a few words here and there from the story. It will be a big help in the long run so I hope you don't skip it. Though translations will still be present in the story, some words like expressions won't be translated and here's why...
So let's get started shall we?
First off let's do expressions/ reactions since Bisaya people are big on expressing or reacting in every conversation and it also shows creativity. Now reminder, not all words have an English word equivalent since it just simply exist to express the person's reaction. While some are modernized version, some goes way back as in gors na, tanders or whatever.
BISAYA 101: EXPRESSIONS
Ginoo ko! – It means my God or an expression using the name of God. Words like 'Sus, Ginoo ko!' 'Aguy, Ginoo!' are also used in the same manner.
Ay butiki! – Butiki literally means lizard. One of the many weird bisaya expression.
Hala! Or Hala ka! – Mostly used when shocked or surprised. On another note, 'Hala ka!' can be used as a way to guilt trip someone when they did something wrong.
Atika oy or Ka-atik gud – Are mostly expressed when disbelieving someone's words. It means 'What a lie'
Matay – A word which if translated would mean death? Or something along those word. But mostly used when someone's dismayed over someone or a situation.
Ahak! - Usually used when you are dismayed or irritated over someone.
Peste ka! – Literally means pest. It's like telling someone that he's a pest.
Pag sure oi! or Sure oy – Also famously expressed when you think someone's not being serious with you or on another note, when you feel like you're being lied to or you just want to confirm if the other party is saying the truth.
Agay! – it means ouch. Mostly uttered when hurt but if used in another tone, it can also be used to scare someone.
