"You both are amazing players, but you guys already know that I can only pick one captain for the team."

The coach's voice was both understanding and prideful at the same time, as he observed the reactions of the two teenage boys that stood in before him.

"De'baron, you played great against Summer View; that last run bought us a win that we desperately needed. You've also improved drastically since last year showing your commitment to your team and overall enjoyment of the game, both key factors in being captain."

The coach mentally rolled his eyes at the smug smirk that played on the lips of the boy on the left.

He was a great player on the field, but his ego and behavior left more then to be desired, as often the boy was the leader of childish pranks against rival teams, and the culprit of several office visits caused from excessive  'touching' of eager female classmates between classes.

The coach cleared his throat and turned towards the boy on the right.

His tanned face held a sort of disinterest, yet he bit his lip in nervousness.

"You've played at a very high level this season as well Rivera. On and off the field, I've noticed your capabilities of bringing the team together; you've done well in helping this team become one, which is the most important thing in this game."

Instead of mirroring the smug look plastered on De'baron's face, the boy just shrugged and kept his eyes glued to the carpeted floor.

This was the main problem the coach faced.

One boy was very eager and willing, as well as very much qualified to be captain of the football team, but his egotistical nature and childish manner made him distasteful and a bad leader.

The other boy, Rivera, was an excellent leader; not just in the sport of football but as well as just in general. Other staff at the school often mentioned his mature and wise nature, though leader qualities were not his only strong points; the boy knew his game like the back of his hand and had the best arm on the team.

The problem with the boy was that though he was a great player, his commitment to the game was a tad shaky. He was not as eager as De'baron in becoming captain of the football team, in fact, though he played great, the energy once found in the boy for the game was almost dissipated.

Thus why the coach had waited until the last day of pre-season to announce the new captain of the boy's senior year.

The coach signed before continuing on.

"You both have your strengths as well as weaknesses, but I feel out of the senior class of players, you two are the most qualified for such an honor. As I said before, sadly I can only chose one if you, but no matter my decision I expect one hundred percent performances out of both of you."

The man stopped before continuing; it was important that no matter whom has captain, that both boys played to their best ability.

"De'baron, you show much promise and excell in the game,-"

The boy to his left smiled and nodded as he interrupted his coach.

"Thank you Sir. It all comes from our teams great coaching."

The man shook his head slightly before finishing his speech.

"Well thank you De'baron, but... I'm going to go with Rivera as the new captain of the Riverside Spartans."
