Chapter 1: How I Blew Myself Up

What is a Variant:

The term variant simply means a human being with superpowers. There are ongoing studies of which the research is sole to discover whether or not this is a genetic condition, as powers can manifest at birth and, later on, or due to accidents that would otherwise extinguish human life. At this point in time, you must probably be wondering why I'm telling you this, trust me it'll all make sense later on in the story.

My name is Kyle Jackson and I'm 18 years old, I was your average college student until I gained my powers and my life was turned upside down. Oh and by the way as crazy as this story sounds trust me it's all true, so please do yourself the favor and don't let this book fall into the wrong hands.

Okay, yes I know that was the most cliché and corny way to start my story but never judge a book by it cover.... or it's the second paragraph. Okay, I'll stop with the cheesy puns and one-liner, so my dear reader if you haven't cringed into another dimension lets jump right into my story...

So of course, the most the worst moment of my life just had to occur on a Monday at my school, "Horatius McFlint's Academy for Gifted Children. "This is a really high-end school that is very strict with its acceptance, seeing that it's a private school that mostly caters to rich and talented kids. Hell, the only reason I got accepted, was because of a recommendation letter which was signed by the entire staff of my high school and my 6.0 GPA which only then enabled me to take the entrance exams of the university.

The entrance exams were designed to give kids like myself who couldn't afford the steep tuition, a chance at receiving an education through means of a full-ride scholarship which gave us a chance to attend one of the top schools internationally.

3 months later I'm in my private, school given the lab with my best friend "Tom Jacobs "

At the time we were working on a pocket tachyon accelerator, disruptor, and creator machine for the upcoming school science fair. As I was busy tailoring the machine's energy core, tom made it known to me that my mom unexpectedly visited and was outside of our lab.

I put the core of the machine down, removed my protective gear, and went out to her, I smiled as I ran to her and hugged her.

While we were catching up, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my leg.

"Ow! I exclaimed as I looked down and I saw that the source of my pain was my annoying 6-year-old half-brother "Kai" pinching my leg. After I shot him and murderous glare and I moved him away from my leg it wasn't long before my mom and I resumed our conversation.

When I brought up the science fair that I was going to participate in this weekend I saw an all too familiar nervous smile creep across my mom's face.

"Spit it out mom! " I said slightly annoyed as I knew she most likely needed me to do her a favor, which is 9 out of 10 times pretty unpleasant.

"Gosh you read me like a book!" said my mother laughing.

" So Kyle, I'm going on a business trip for a while, can you take care of your baby brother until I get back?" she asked smiling. At this point, as you can imagine was livid "First of all I'm busy right now, and doesn't he have a dad? " I questioned infuriated and greatly distressed with her request.

"Yes, but your stepdad is accompanying me on my trip." said my mother as she rolled her eyes in slight annoyance."

"Alright, I'll take care of him," I said accepting my defeat, seeing as there was no way I could out get of this. "But the minute you return, please relieve me of this burden," I said as I sighed in disappointment. "Yes son, as soon as I get back I'll pass by to pick him up!" said my mom as she got kai's things from the car and started it. I took kai's stuff and to my mom as she left. You know how you have these gut feelings, well my gut feeling told me that this was going to be anything but normal week....

A few hours later when I got home I gave kai a bowl of popcorn, some apple juice and I turned on the TV.

Then I showed him how to call me if he needed anything. With that I closed the door and went back to the lab, when I arrived at the lab I saw tom laughing with his girlfriend "Sarah." Okay pause confession time, to be entirely honest I've always been kind of jealous of tom and his amazing luck, especially with girls. Like we all have that one friend who puts on a pair of jeans and finds ten bucks, or they're extremely popular with everyone in school, well.... for me this was tom now you can kind of understand what I'm about to do next. I walked between them being a massive prick and said "Alright, Alright we've got work to do tom!" With an angry glare in my direction and a sigh, tom kissed Sarah goodbye and we got to work. Throughout us working all kinds of weird things were happening tools disappearing, chairs moving but at the time I didn't pay attention to what was happening because I was extremely busy. I was about to drink a glass of water when I heard footsteps.... heavy footsteps, this sent chills down my spine. Because they weren't toms due to the fact that he was frozen solid next to me with fear. "'H -hello?" I said shakily with all the courage I could muster as I put the glass of water down - w -who's there?" I listened but there was no response when suddenly Kai jumped out yelling "Whatcha doing?" . I screamed at the top of my lungs and jumped back.

When I calmed down I bit, I was about to storm over to Kai and smack the living daylights out of him. But mid - storming I heard a fizzing sound in the back of me. When I looked back I saw the core that was in the machine had gotten wet and was now sparking and giving off small amounts of radiation. Apparently, when kai startled me I knocked my glass of water over and of course the water splash on the core and was now causing it to malfunction.

Tom and I looked at each other in horror at what was happening, we immediately ran over to the core and started trying to stabilize it, which of course was to no avail seen the damage had already been dealt. Suddenly the machine activated and started displacing tachyons and dangerous amounts of radiation. The tachyons were moving so fast that they were imploding and causing wind streams. Tom and I covered our faces as we looked on in total fear at the sight in front of us suddenly a wind stream hit tom back and he crashed into the wall. As I turned to run the winds got so dense they had a vacuuming effect on me pinning me to my current position. The wind pressure got extremely heavy I yelled in pain and the wind tore off my clothes and the tachyon's ripped apart my skin at speeds faster than light.

Suddenly the core went silent then it exploded throwing radiation, fire, and tachyons everywhere. I yelled it anguish as it felt like a million knives were stabbing me all at the same time. Then I wave of fire, radiation, and tachyon's washed over me, I tried to scream but nothing was coming out .... then finally I felt my eyes rolling back and everything went black.
