Often when driving over the lake, one side of the water will be really choppy while the other side is very calm. This has been a great mystery to us interns since we started working there. We can't figure out why the lake doesn't have the same amount of movement.
Nathan, Tom, and I were driving across the dam one day, when Tom noticed that there were random spots of still water, which was odd since the rest of the lake seemed to have at least some movement. So he voiced his curiosity, "I wonder why some of the lake is so smooth?" he asked. I was busy playing on my phone at the time and didn't know the answer anyway, so keeping my face perfectly straight I said, "That's probably the areas where the fish aren't swimming." I meant it as a joke, but when I looked up at Tom he looked like he was trying to decide if I meant it. I couldn't help it, I broke out laughing and he finally realized I was joking.
"I'm gonna go home and tell my 13 year old sister that," Tom said, "She'll probably say, 'you're an idiot!'" I couldn't help but laugh, thinking that his sister and I could be great friends.
