“Another perfect score Miss. Happle, keeping doing this good and you can teach the class!” Mrs. Rose, the biology teacher, laughed and walked down the rest of the row handing back tests.
“Yeah Miss. Happle,” Kelsey grunted staring down at the 75% marked in red. Kelsey turned flipping the paper over. Frizzy, blonde and pink hair peeked out of her baseball cap.
“You didn’t fail at least,” Brooke smiled brushing blue bangs out of her eyes.
“Tell that to my parents,” Kelsey cried and put her head on the table. “Why are you so perfect, what do you use?” She jerked her head up knocking the baseball cap off her head, staring into Brooke’s eyes she asked. “Where are the drugs?” Brooke burst into laughter causing the class to turn and stare at her some confused and other startled. She stopped abruptly and turned red causing the other students to laugh. The bell rang ending 7th period, Brooke and Kelsey wiped away tears and walked to their lockers.
“Meet you at the bus,” Brooke said jamming her text books into the off white and red backpack she had owned since 6th grade. She turned and walked out of the glass double doors.
“Hey Brooke!” James called as she turned the corner towards the busses, he flipped back his long, frizzy, brown hair and pat her head.
“Hey James,” She said rolling her eyes but smiling.
“So how are those honor classes?” James smirked slapping the overstuffed backpack. She began to retort when the bus engines started up.
“Gotta go James see ya tomorrow!” She yelled running towards her transportation home. Where are you Kelsey? Brooke thought as she boarded the bus, sitting in an empty seat. Shrugging off the thought she pulled out her neon blue and black moto Z along with some cat ear headphones. A small Instagram logo popped up at the top of her screen, she clicked it and rolled her eyes as a girl from school flipping off the camera appeared on the screen. Exiting she turned on a random playlist and turned towards the window.
Her phone buzzed, Kelsey had texted. “Sorry, had a test retake, I’ll just have my mom pick me up,” Brooke began typing back when she was flung sideways. She slammed into the seat across from her with a grunt. Glass flew around the bus as it rolled 3 more times. The bus finally stopped, laying on it’s roof. Brooke looked around her vision blurry, darkness creeping slowly inward from the corners.
“Is everyone okay?” She heard one of the older boys ask as he stood up. A bigger boy stood up next to him and looked around, his eyes landed on Brooke. His eyes grew huge and he ran forward.
“We need an ambulance!” He screamed kneeling and staring terrified at her stomach, she followed his stare finding a huge shard of glass had pierced her stomach, blood was flowing in small streams down the shard. The boy grabbed her shoulder and turned her onto her back. “You’ll be okay don’t worry,” he grabbed her hand. Something about him was familiar but what? She thought staring up at his face, his long hair was hanging in front of his eyes.
“James?” She asked weakly, he looked up.
“Hey, were getting help okay?” Tears were forming in his eyes but he smiled them away.
“When did you start riding this bus?” She asked putting her other hand onto his. He laughed slightly.
“Just started to today,” his face was scratched up and his arm had a few pieces of glass in it but other than that and bruises he would survive. Her eye lids started drifting downward, James shook her hand slightly. “Hey, come on don’t leave okay?” He smiled but this one didn’t hide the sadness.
“Come down here please,” she said as sirens pulled closer, he obeyed and brought his head closer.
“Please don’t make these last words or something, I promise yo..” She kissed him mid-sentence.
“Now you really can’t die,” he smiled, she laughed slightly. “Here this might hurt but we have to get you outside, anyone one else in need of the ambulance should follow me,” James grabbed Brooke under her knees and under her arms then slowly lifted her up. A couple of boys and girl stood up and followed him off the bus.
“Put her here,” one of the medics said holding a stretcher. James set her down lightly and grabbed her hand.
“Can I come with?” He asked, the medic looked at the people who needed assistance. “Please sir,” James added, the medic sighed and smiled at him, wrinkles formed around his mouth. The 43 year old shrugged.
“Yeah we should have enough room,”
“Thank you so much,” James said following them into the ambulance still holding Brooke’s hand. They lifted the stretcher into the ambulance, Brooke grunted then hit a coughing fit. Her eyes flashed bright violet then her head fell to the side.
“Did you see that?” A younger medic asked stepping back.
“You saw nothing,” James whispered sadly his eyes flashed blue, the medics looked around confused for a moment then returned to helping Brooke.
“Damn it looks like she’s passed out from blood loss,”
“Come on Brooke,” James whispered squeezing her hand.
“We’ll need to operate,” the oldest medic said the others nodded in agreement.
“How far are we from the hospital?” James asked looking frantically out the window.
“Not far maybe 3 minutes and then we will be there,” the younger medic smiled reassuringly. James sat down, sweat dripped from his forehead.
“You okay?” The older medic asked.
“Yeah fine,” James lied blood began to drip from behind his baggy sweatshirt him and the medic had just noticed the giant gashes in his hoody. The medic ran over and unzipped the sweatshirt revealing multiple pieces of glass had pierced his stomach and chest. James laughed slightly and fell to the side.
