“Brooke!” James yelled, she looked over to him. He was pointing to a boy around their age who was staring wide eyed at them. She caught the boys eyes causing him to turn and run.
“Hey come back!” She dove towards the boy trying to land gracefully in the grass beside him. Instead she tripped rolling in the grass. The boy giggled forgetting that the girl in the grass had wings.
“My name is Brooke!” She waved to the boy as she picked herself up.
“I’m… Harley,” the boy smiled, his voice was a little higher than Brooke excepted.
“Nice to meet you Harley!” Harley stared at Brooke as she stood up.
“You have wings too?” He asked quietly. Brooke didn’t understand at first.
“Too?” She asked, the boy removed his sweatshirt. Giant orange, almond shaped wings sprouted from his back. “Woah,” James landed beside Brooke. Harley covered his chest with his arms.
“Hello,” James stared at his wings with Brooke. Harley put his sweat shirt back on as his wings shattered into tiny orange shards. Brooke stared at the shards, scared of the same thing happening as in the hospital room. But, she was drawn to this person for some reason.
“Woah! That’s so cool!” Harley blushed as Brooke ran over.
“Thanks,” Brooke grabbed one of the orange shards as it floated to the ground, the shard immediately turned purple. Harley stared at the shard, so did James. James looked up at Harley.
“That’s not possible!”
“What?” Brooke asked looking up at James.
“We have to go now Brooke!” James grabbed Brooke’s arm.
“Let me go!” She jerked out of his grip and staggered away. Harley stepped next to Brooke and put his hand on her shoulder.
“Hey, do you want to come to my house to get something on other than a hospital gown?” Brooke looked down and blushed.
“Oh, sure. Thanks!” Brooke walked with Harley to his house. James was left standing on the side of the road confused.
“I hope your parents don’t mind a random girl in your room,” they walked into the house and up the stairs.
“I’ve had lots of girls over,” Brooke was stunned. Harley didn’t seem like the type of guy to brag about dates.
“Here is my room,” Brooke was even more stunned when she arrived to a purple room. “There are tee shirts in that drawer, jeans in this drawer. Dresses in the closet, bras in this drawer…”
“You have dresses and bras?” Brooke asked confused. Did he keep his ex’s clothes. Harley turned around and blushed.
“You thought I was a boy?” Brooke looked Harley up and down, the short brown hair and baggy clothes made her seem male. Brooke looked closely at her new friends face. With this new information she could see the femininity of Harley’s jawline and facial features.
“Oh no! I’m sorry, you’re a girl?” Harley smiled.
“Well I was born a girl but, I’m gender fluid. He, or she works, I don’t mind.” Harley looked down at the beige carpet.
“That’s cool!” Brooke said turning and looking through all of the clothing. She noticed and orange and purple sun dress that reminded her of earlier. “Hey, what was with earlier? When those shards I touched turned purple?” Harley blushed and stuttered.
“I…It was nothing, if the shards change it means that the people are close. But I’ve never met you before so it must be a mess up…” Harley was obviously lying but Brooke couldn’t think of what else it could mean. Was what happened with the doctor a mess up too? “Who was that guy you were with?”
“Oh, James. We are… friends. Known him since like 3rd grade.” Friends? Brooke thought to herself. Then why did I kiss him.
“He seemed to like you a bit more than a friend.” Harley teased thinking back to James’ face when the shard turned purple.
“Yeah,” was all Brooke could think to say. She continued looking around, seeing some cute ripped jeans and a black tee shirt. She looked over at Harley who was sorting magazines and decided to just quickly change in the corner.
“Hey, do you read…” Harley turned right as Brooke was taking off her shirt. “Oh, I’ll go!” Harley quickly scurried out the door sitting in the hallway. Her face was burning. Brooke was wearing a bright blue and white bra that was covered in lacey flowers.
“Oh… my gosh.” Harley whispered to herself, thinking of the shard. The shards changing didn’t mean close in they way Harley had told. It meant they were soul mates. James must have known.
“I’m done,” Brooke walked into the hallway showing off the slightly baggy jeans and very baggy shirt. It was a lot better than the hospital gown, but about a size or two to big for Brooke.
“You look like a deflated sumo wrestler,” Harley laughed. Brooke snorted which caused them to laugh more.
“Hey would you want to spend the night?” Harley asked.
“Yeah!” Brooke said, for some reason she trusted Harley. A lot more than she trusted James.
That night was eventful. Harley’s parents came home and ordered pizza. They were a little mad Harley didn’t say anything about Brooke though. Brooke and Harley played board games, did horrible make up on each other. Compared each others wings.
“Mine are so much bigger than yours!” Harley laughed.
“Only because you’re taller!” Brooke pretended to pout as both of their wings shattered. Harley put out her hands catching a few shards that immediately turn orange.
“That is never going to be not cool,” Brooke grabbed a few orange shards and watched them change. Harley smiled up at Brooke, taking in her beauty. Brooke’s medium length, curly blue hair was flowing around her face. The baggy tee shirt slipped down slightly showing a swim suit tan line.
“Harley?” Brooke asked smiling up at Harley.
“Oh, um yeah?” Harley felt nervous, more nervous than she ever had before.
“I had a friend who was gender fluid, we don’t talk much anymore but she had a masculine name she preferred sometimes. Do you have one?” Harley’s heart skipped a beat, no one had cared to ask her that before.
“Well, my real name is Karen.” Harley brushed frizzy brown strands from her eyes. “Harley is my preferred name.”
“Oh, okay. So Harley it is!” Brooke had a pen and piece of paper in front of her and began scribbling something down.
“Wait! What are you writing?” Brooke began to smile so Harley lunged at her trying to pry the paper from her hand.
“It’s Nothing!” Brooke yelled giggling.
“Sure doesn’t seem like nothing!” Harley finally had the paper, she looked down at it to see her name in weird, swirly letters. Brooke blushed and laughed.
“I do that for fun sometimes,” Harley smiled and put the drawing on her desk. She turned around.
“So what do you…” She began to ask when Brooke ran up and kissed her.
“I want… you as more than a friend, even though we just met today I feel like we could be together forever.” Brooke looked around the room as she spoke, meeting Harley’s eyes as she finished. Harley tasty pizza on her lips and smiled.
“I didn’t want to tell you this, I was afraid it would sway your feelings. If you touch an angels wing and it changes colors, it means the vessels and the magic are soul mates. Meant to be together.”
“You aren’t lying?” Brooke looked Harley up and down.
“I promise I’m not lying,” Harley smiled. Surprised that Brooke would feel the same as her after only spending a night together. Brooke leaned in and kissed her again grabbing her hand as she did. The rings on Harley’s hand being spun around by Brooke’s fingers.
“Want to watch some Netflix?” Harley smiled and pulled Brooke onto her bed holding and kissing Brooke as random shows played in the background.
Harley quietly giggled at the show, it was horrible but her slap happiness made everything funny. “Brooke, did you see that?” Harley asked turning to the girl in her arms. Brooke had her head buried in Harley’s side, both of her hands were loosely intertwined with Harley’s and she was snoring softly.
Harley gentle moved onto her side and stared at the sleeping girl. Gently she stroked her hair and kissed her before going to sleep herself.

James was furious, he didn’t deserve this! He knew he loved Brooke, why was she destined to be with some random guy. Who was this orange angel anyway? He had no right to take her away from him when he had worked so hard.
It was all the green angels fault. He was the one who changed everything. Brooke had kissed James! They could have been together happily! Now James had to fight this random nobody for her. James flew into his window, not wanting to disturb his parents who probably didn’t even know he was in the hospital. They didn’t pay attention to anything.
One day people were going to listen to him, they were going to obey him. Brooke would be by his side. But now was no time for thinking that. He would need her trust back before she would ever get close to kissing him again. He stupidly freaked out over the wing shards.
Buuuuzzz his phone vibrated in his pocket. Kelsey was calling him, that was strange. Especially at midnight.
“James! Are you with Brooke?”
“No, why?”
“She won’t answer! She told me you both got released from the hospital and that she would help me with this project.” Kelsey sounded frantic.
“Maybe she fell asleep?” James was to upset and to tired to deal with her freaking out.
“Maybe, I wanted to know if you’re with her.”
“No she went to some dudes house.” There was a pause. James contemplated telling Kelsey who he was.
“She won’t answer because she is with a dude at midnight. Did Brooke hit her head?”
“I think she might have, just text her in the morning and see if she answers.”
“Okay, thanks James.”
Click James laid back staring at the ceiling. Brooke was with her soul mate at midnight. What were they doing? James was disgusted, he rolled over and threw the blankets over his head.
Brooke woke up first, she breathed in deep smelling coconut and vanilla. It was Harley. Brooke smiled and snuggled closer to Harley squeezing her hand.
“Good morning,” Harley sleepily muttered.
“Good morning,” Brooke stayed right where she was knowing she needed to get up eventually. A memory pinged in her head, she was talking to Kelsey last night about a project. Her worry slipped away as she cuddled closer to Harley.
“We should probably move, you know like get up.” Brooke opened her eyes and saw Harley staring at her inches away.
“We should, but we don’t have too.” Brooke kissed Harley and sat up stretching in her oversized clothes.
“I smell eggs and bacon,” Harley sniffed and smiled tackling Brooke. “Do you want to go downstairs and meet my parents?” Brooke laughed.
“Sure,” they both walked downstairs still slightly asleep.
“Hey Brooke, nice to finally meet you!” A cheery, 6 foot man walked into the living room.
“Hello!” Brooke answered back not nearly as happy as Harley’s father.
“Harley told me that you have wings like her,” Brooke was a little surprised.
“Your parents know about both of our wings?” Harley nodded.
“Don’t worry, my parents are okay with the whole wing thing. I fell down the stairs one day, broke my arm. When we got to the hospital they said it was fine, like it had healed. When we got home I was in the bathroom looking at my arm when these giant orange wings opened up.”
“That sure was a surprising day,” the man laughed and walked back into the kitchen.
“Wow, I haven’t told my parents yet. Wonder how they will react.” Harley and Brooke walked into the kitchen seeing eggs, bacon and pancakes on the counter. Harley grabbed plates for her and Brooke then began piling eggs on her plate.
“Just grab what you want,” Harley’s mother said smiling. Harley’s mother looked exactly like Harley minus the hair. Harley’s mother had long blonde hair and a slightly tan complexion. Her bright green eyes stared back happily.
Harley and Brooke sat down eating their food. “How long have you known Harley?” Harley’s mother asked.
“We met yesterday, I was just ‘released’ from the hospital and was flying around when I saw Harley. She showed me her wings and we came here to talk and become friends.”
“What happened that put you in the hospital?” Harley’s mother seemed concerned.
“My bus got in an accident with a drunk driver. Me and my friend were badly injured. There was glass everywhere. He has wings too so we both healed and were released.”
“How many people do you know have wings?”
“Counting me and Harley, four.”
“Wow,” Harley’s mom said. “I wonder how you all got these powers,”
“Me too, James. My friend said something about the magic choosing us as vessels.”
“Really choosing us?” Harley asked.
“Yeah, at least that’s what he told me. I have absolutely no idea about any of this.”
