Chapter 2I ran through the market place. I must have hit 20 people while going through the huge crowd. On Saturday all the house wives and their many children, business men, mercants, farmers, maids, artisians and any other person who is has some form of busness or need of house supplies come. And of course I had to be one of them. Mother had sent to me to buy 2 pints of milk, a dozen eggs and some apples. That wasn't really the life crisis that was occurring. The life crisis was that I was going to be late for my brothers arrival and I hate to be the one to mess up the tradition. I ran through the croud as more people starting lining up. It made no sense as how the people start to be coming in the second I need to be home. I was almost through I could feel it just a little more and I could be on the main path to the house. Suddenly two little boys maybe 6 or 7 came running through yelling 'excuse me'. One of them came and threw their arm at me by a meer mistake. I lost my balance and almost fell back wards but a man broke my fall.
"Are you all right miss?"
he had a sort of rough tone to his voice as if he had been using the tobacco pipe.
"Yes thank you sir." but before I can start heading back I fell a cold liquid rushing down my stockings. I look to the 2 pints of milk and one had shattered to pieces. I sighed as I had to buy a new one or else mother would kill me. But I had to keep the tradition. Buying a new pint would have to wait. I got through the last of the crowd and made it back on the main path. As I'm running I hear a very soft familiar voice."Dear heavens child! Yer stockings are stained and soaked!"
"Yes I know Barabra I had a little problem with the glass pint of milk at the market place."
"And were are you running off to dressed like that? You will fall flat on yer face child."
She was taking about my shoes. Oh how much I hated them so. They squeeze my toes into the tiniest compartment and they have a little lift in the back to make me taller which I honestly don't need since I'm already tall as it is but mother forced the lady life on me.
"Mother made me wear them and I have to run home to keep the tradition."
"Yer still doing that I thought you turned 15 now didn't you?"
"Can't break tradion."
"Alright then, farewell Madeline."
"Goodbye Barbra."
Barbra is my mothers dear school friend. Oddly enough though Barbra is about ten years older then my mother. She lives a little farther then our house which is great because she is great to talk to. She always has stories to share. I see my brother walking up. I start to run faster and I head to the back door. I shove my keys in the door handle and my hands were as eager to get in as I am. I swing the door open and drop the basket of goods on the table. I run to the window as my mother shouts. I didn't care what she was saying. I stick my nose in just in time. My brother was walking up the steeps. And I had finally made it. I was so proud of myself. My hair had fell out of its beautifully done bun, my stockings were all ripped and stained white, they were also still wet. My shoes also had milk leaking into my socks making them even more uncofortable then before and the sole of my shoe was covered in mud. I had forgot to check them when running in to the house since I noticed there was mud covering the floor like a litter of puppies running around. He finally opens the door.
"So I saw your little run."
"You saw that!" I buried my head in shame
"Its ok I mean you look like a mess what happened?"
"I was in the market and ran back just to see you."
"The market is a mile from here!" his eyes seemed to come out of his face.
"Yes I know." I laughed a little at the thought of seeing myself through the whole journey.
"Madeline!" my mother boomed "you broke one of pints of milk, all the apples are bruised and the eggs are cracked! You also left a mess on the floor and look at your shoes!" she was really mad this time "I thought I rassed a young lady but instead I get this!"
"I'm sorry mother."
"You will go buy new food in the morning and this will be from your own money. You will also clean the house after you clean yourself. Am I clear?"
"Yes mother."
"Good now get going!"
My brother looks at me as I can tell he wanted to start to burst laughing. But my mother would then shout at him as she is in one of her moods.
"Well before you go do you want to see what I got you today?"
"Well I guess it can't hurt so proceed dear brother of mine."
"So I present to the beautiful young princess Madeline a gift from the king, himself; that would be me. Please take it and treasure it." he kneals on the floor and holds the bag high above his head.
"Thank you King Henry. I will now take this gift and treasure it. It shall be placed in my treasure room next to all the other treasures. But I must say it is almost full."
We both start laughing as if we were fools. I then untie the string that coils around the bag. I gently open the bag and find a beautiful rock. Acutally I wasn't sure if it was a rock. Rocks are never such a bright color neither are they so transparent.
"You don't like it." Henry's smile falls
"No, no I do like it but I can't make out what it is. Is it a rock?"
"A rock?" Henry starts laughing again
"What did I say?"
"That is a mineral, I'm not sure which one because I am no scientist but it is a mineral of sorts. I just found it while walking home and I thought that it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen."
" oh that makes much more sense I thought you found me a transparent blue rock!" I start laughing as I feel very ashamed of my thought.
"A transparent blue rock!" he starts laughing with me again "where do you get such ideas."
"From my head of course. Now I think I need to start cleaning the house and myself." I look down to my cream stained stockings and the lace enbroderment on my dress that has egg whites dripping on the floor.
I run to the back of the house to get clean.
