"Well, who loves history, anyway?"
That's the question I asked myself upon considering to write something about a Historical Fiction.
I am tired of RHETORIC. Endless rhetorics that brought nothing but noise and not change.
----------------------------------
It was 1521 when Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Mactan to conquer Philippines, for three particular reasons, that's three G's - God, Gold and Glory.
Though he was killed in an epic battle with a local "Datu", Lapu-Lapu, Magellan's discovery (and later death and defeat) of the Philippines, paved way for more ships and soldiers of Spain to conquer the vast land. Then, the Spaniards ruled and colonized the Philippines for more than 300 (plus) years. Millions of Filipino were abused and died during the reign of the Spanish regime in my beloved country.
There are so much epic revolts recorded and not recorded during those long years of colonization. But the most famous death, was the death of Philippines' National Hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal in Bagumbayan (now Luneta Park or Rizal Park). He held no gun for revolution. He was one of those who believe that the pen is mightier than the sword. And indeed, though he was killed because of his satirical work of art against the Spanish government, his ideas, works and books, still remain until today and stil serve as an inspiration not only here in the Philippines but also in other countries, like in Germany where a statue of him stood as a symbol of his heroic battle - not with guns and bullets but with a pen and paper.
In 1898, because of the epic lost of the sinking power of Spain, against the American forces (dispute that starts because of Cuba's colonization), the Philippines was sold for $20,000,000 in a treaty, called, "TREATY in PARIS".
Since then, the Philippines became a colony of the United States of America. There were still bloody revolts for those who cried out for freedom. Dead bodies continued to flood down the whole nation like a river.
But in 1920's- 1940's, Philippines, by the help of the Americans, aided the Filipino nation to stand on its own and have their own freedom, though little by little.
But, in 1939, when Nazi Germany began an atack and conquest in Warsaw, Poland, it paved way for what we called today as the World War II.
In 1942, Japanese forces (allied of the Nazis), began to doomed many Asian Regions but most particularly, the Philippines (which is at that time, a military base of United States of America).
For three long years, death and massive persecution was brought by Japanese to the Filipino people. Many women were raped, many children were killed in cold-blood and many men were forced to labor 'til they died. But the World War II was ended when the British Forces broke Germany's Enigma, and when the two Atomic Bombs of United States, bombarded Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.
Japan surrendered, Hitler's Nazi Germany was lost.
Then, at last, in 1945, after the World War II, the American Government gave the Philippines its long awaited freedom. After being colonized by many countries and after all the death and the hard beatings, Philippines is finally free. But, decades after Her given freedom, my Beloved Country is still chained in poverty, fettered with corruption and terrorism.
From being the Second Largest economy in the whole Asia (next to Japan), the cream of the crop became rotten. The name of this beloved country had been forgotten. From a first world country, respected and praised, now, Her name was almost been erased from the map.Philippines need a revolution. Not a bloody one, but a peaceful progressive one. This book is my dream for my country.
Believing, that the strength of the country is not on the shoulders of the government but on the hands of the People!
Every simple Filipino can dream as high as they can, and the work of the government is to support that dream until that dream turns into reality!
