Chapter 4:
Lucy was right. I was preparing to leave the next morning. I didn't know what happened to Edith, but no one saw her the next morning. The entire court showed up to see me off. Most people looked at me with pity. Lucy said the rumor was that King James wanted me away so bad, he married me to the only person who would take me.Lucy hugged me tightly before I left, the act of kindness not surprising anyone. Everyone knew of the unbreakable friendship between the Society daughter, and the outcast. Even Lucy's parents didn't dare interrupt. "You have to write me," Lucy said into my shoulder. I smiled "as do you. And, tell me when you become betrothed, which will undoubtedly be soon." We chuckled a bit before moving apart. I waved goodbye at my friend as I climbed into the carriage. Once the door shut, there was no further connection. I was going to impending doom, leaving behind my perfectly comfortable life. The Count of Dubois did not want me. He did not want anyone. He was evil, dark, mean. It was no wonder he never married.
His appearance would never make up for his personality. All those selfish women who came to him for his looks and riches surely fled in horror. I let out the heaviest sigh I had ever, and leaned my head against the seat. I was getting married. There was no turning back, King James had finalized his decision. Edith would've been a much better match for the Count. A woman who could match his darkness with her own. I would do nothing, we probably would never be in love. I would never have the children I wanted, not by this man. So many things were going so wrong in my life. Things I once thought I had control over. Now, everything was spiraling out of my control. Desperate, I had nothing else to do but sleep. So, I did.
AN: SORRY THIS WAS SHORT BUT I WAS HAVING WRITER'S BLOCK.
