Ch: 5 Welcome to the safe house
"My head hurts," I complained to Emile who was half pulling half dragging me through the St. Patrick elementary school parking lot. Emile was taking the short way home which is through the parking lot at St. Patrick's to the dirt path to the lake. There you would find the street we live on. "Just hold on Annie, we're almost there," She reassured me. I don't understand what's wrong with me but can't stop thinking about that image in my head. It keeps reappearing in mind every time I try to stop thinking about it; It's like a song on the radio that's over played and you want it to stop, but it can't stop because it's stuck on instant replay. What were those shadow like things chasing me? "Emile stop!" I pleaded. "Why? What's wrong?" She asked. I turned and emptied the toxic liquid of my stomach on the parking lot.
"Gross." Emile said, almost puking herself, "I mean are you feeling fine?"
"Actually, I was close-" I say, holding two fingers to make my point. "-to throwing up my whole digestive system."
"OK first of all, T.M.I. Annie! And second, there's a pharmacy down the street, so wait here; I'll get you something for Nausea." Emile said, and started to walk away slowly, unsure if she should leave me alone, but continued walking regardless.
Wait! I said to myself. Emile seriously left me all alone in a parking lot!!
I quickly ran to find her, but like the fast walker she is, she was already long gone. I walked at a slow pace since I felt sick and because my head was hurting. I guess that running is out of the question!
As I walked down the street, it dawned on me that this is the same street where those shadow like things were chasing me! Now I'm afraid.
"Are you Annika Elson?" A stern but feminine voice asked.
"Yes..." I replied cautiously.
An arm grabbed me forcing me to face it's owner. There was a man and a woman behind me wearing black and navy coloured uniforms which made them look very shadowy.
The words I prayed that I'd never hear come out of her mouth.
"Annika Elson you've been deemed unfit for society. you're coming with us."
I was sitting alone in my special chair that only I was allowed to sit on. It was a nice and soft reclineable chair that never failed to make me feel relaxed but not this time. In fact you could say that I was the polar opposite of relaxed. I was far too concerned about my rebellious little brother to relax. Where did Judas go last night? Did he get in to trouble? Is that why he won't tell me what he did last night? I kept asking myself.
I looked at the time on a nearby clock to see that it was 7:30pm. It was now time for me to visit the safe house. I rose from my seat and wondered around in a daze, still thinking of Judas 'till I found the kitchen. There I found a brown paper bag that was stained with grease near the bottom and an ice cold can of soda.
"Tally," My mother Rosina called from upstairs. "You need to go see Kane now, before it's too late!"
"Okay I'm going," I said. The safe house was about to close for the day. I grabbed both the bag and soda then began my jog to the safe house. Once I arrived, I immediately noticed the lack of lights on despite it being almost dark outside. I took four steps inside and I was stopped by a nurse or a lady who looked like a nurse. "I'm just looking for Dr. Marie Elson. Could you tell me where she is please?" The nurse pointed to a chair and told me to wait while she left to get Dr. Elson for me. I'm not stupid I knew she was not going let me see Dr. Elson, so I decided to be a little sneaky. I crept around to the back of the building once the nurse lady was long gone. At the back of the building there was a window that Dr. Elson left open for me just in case I couldn't get in through the front door. That window was a window to her office. I pushed open the window and pulled my upper body and my legs through the window as silently as possible. Dr. Marie Elson was busy typing away on a keyboard when she looked up and almost screamed but then relaxed as she recognized me. She smiled at me. "Tally! What are you doing here? and why did you come through the window? "Some nurse lady stopped me at the door and told me to wait while she left get 'you' for me. I bet she really left to find someone to kick me out" "oh well... Glad nothing bad happened." she said. Marie stood up from her desk to hug me. She look me up an down, from head to toe and said "look how tall you are! you've really grown a lot" I smiled. "It's good to see you again Marie" I spoke politely. I was happy to see her again. After all Marie is a family friend that went to the same high school as my parents. She even use to babysit me when I was little. I remember that Judas use to play with Marie's youngest daughter. What was her name again? Annie or something? Marie smiled again "so what can I do for you Tally?" "I came to see Kane" "wha- again...Tally you know I can't do that, it's not allowed" There was not longer any smile on Marie's face. "Please, let me see him" I begged. Marie looked very uncertain. "You know I hardly ever get the chance to see him" Marie's uncertain look is unwavering. "fine but make it quick and make sure no one see's you" Marie said with a hint of worry on her face. "don't worry no one will see me" Marie grabbed a pair of keys from under her desk and then bent over to unlock one of the drawers of her desk. She pulled out a doctors coat for me to wear and a small badge from the newly unlocked drawer. I slipped my arm through the arm holes in the coat. Then Marie pinned a badge on my coat, being careful not puncture a hole in my skin. The badge gave me permission to see the patients of the safe house and in case anyone did see me they would think I'm a doctor thanks to the coat. In the safe house no one expect the doctors not even family members are allowed to see the patients, but the public does not know about this. Two weeks ago I persuaded Marie to secretly let me visit Kane. Marie at first was completely against me seeing Kane, which was understandable. Both of us would be in danger if anyone found out.Quickly I left Marie's office and made my way through the never ending web of hallways. Eventually I found my destination after almost getting lost a few times. I stood in front of a pearly white door with strange digital writing in place of numbers on the door. Before I go inside I looked around to make sure nobody saw me. I walked into the room and everything inside was pure white, the chairs, tables, walls, the flowers that sat by the window, everything. White like the colour of milk. "How can anyone stand seeing nothing but white all day" I said to no one. I walked around the room but I could not find Kane anywhere. I was confused. Where could he have gone?
