 “Uncovering Animal Abuse”

“He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men.  We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals” (Kant Int).  He who hurts animals is the ones that cause many animals to act crazy.  He who is cruel will be judged as cruelly by others as well.  Man that treat them this way also treat man the same.  The cruelty to the animals causes them to be in shelters.    Shelters house abused animals that will continue to suffer from emotional and physical effects, all which could be prevented.

Many effects can be seen in the animals that were abused or neglected.  Some of them are long term, while others can be treated.  The physical effects are visible on the body of the animals.  Many different types of physical effects can be seen like the collar being too tight. Having the collar too tight can injure or even kill the animal at times.  Mange and starvation also affects the dogs. Mange leads to hair loss, sores, and even the animal scratching.   Starvation will eventually kill the animal just because the owner neglects to feed the animal over a period of time.  If this is seen do not confront the owner just contact the animal control (“Report” Int).

Emotional effects are also a big part of what the animal goes through after he/she was abused or neglected.  The animals will also present shy or aggressive behaviors.  The animals will hide under beds, in corners, or some where they think they cannot be seen.   Per say if a dog or cat was harmed by a male then the animal would most likely hiss, snarl, barks, or even snap at any male that would come near them, just because a male abused him/her before.  The animal would also be shy and will not approach a male or be in the same room as one (DogArticleDude Int).   On other hand a dog or cat may just cower down to that pacific type of person.  An animal most likely will never get over the emotional effects that were faced in their lives, but it is in the best interest of the new owner to put him/her in a training course.  “Most often dogs who have suffered abuse will have at least some type of psychological effect from verbal abuse and may also have physical damage” (DogArticleDude Int).  There are places that try to bring awareness to these things like PETA, (People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

Many of the animals are treated as members of the family, but unfortanltly many are not treated like family.  According to PETA dogs do not belong on a chain even though it is legal in many places.  Being chained up just turns them against people in time.  The dogs also do not belong in cages.  Many owners put the animal in a cage until they have time to take care of them and this is not fair to the animal.  They need a place to play and run around all the time (“Cruel” Int).

Birds also are miss treated at times.  Putting a bird in a cage can cause the bird to be lonely, and bored.  Birds kept in cages do not get the opportunity to fly or even stretch their wings, because the cages are just too small for the birds to move around.  If the bird just has the opportunity to fly at times or ever a bigger habitat with a play mate the bird would be less lonely and could stretch their wings (“Cruel” Int).

Hoarding animals is also a huge problem in the world.  Hoarding is when people have more things than they can handle.  Having more animals in the house then there is room for can not only be harmful to people’s health, but it is also harmful to the animals.  Illnesses can be speared around, it may smell bad, even look bad.  With trash every where even rotten food that has been setting out for weeks.  Hoarders do not know that they are commenting animal abuse (“Cruel” Int).

Looking at how many animals are abused or neglected in a year. Gets people thinking why is this happening, how can people help stop this, and what kind of people do this to animals. Well most people that commit animal cruelty fit in to one of three different categories, unintentional, Intentional, and cruel intention  Many of the people do not even know they are being cruel to the animals. Either because they do not think about it or do not realize it is happening at the time.  For example, some may keep a dog in their yard with a doghouse that is on the ground and gets flooded with water when it rains, or they keep their dog on a short chain all of the time without realizing that the dog needs better shelter (“Information” Int).
