i. a thin line

when you were born,
you were too small
and
already balancing on that
thin line
that marks
life and death.

with breaths so weak
and a body so small,
you weren't supposed to
live.

he won't live,
the doctors said.
nothing's right,
they said.

how terrible is it
to be born
surrounded by
doubts
and expectations of
disappointment?

how terrible is it
to be born
surrounded by challenges,
already having to face
obstacles and hurdles?

how terrible is it
to be born
surrounded by
those who have already
given up on
you?

born to lose,
born with tired eyes,
born surrounded by sorrow
a born tragedy.

you were too small
and
you weren't supposed to
live.
yet, here you are,
in front of me,
alive
with those same tired eyes
and
still
balancing on that
thin line
that marks
life and death.
