After he lost something that really precious to him, he somewhat being afraid to others.
He was afraid of getting closer to other people around him.
He was thinking, if he found another person that he really cared of, he was so afraid that the person will suddenly leave eternally like before.
By eternally means, losing forever.
In other words, being separate by death.
Soon, he realise he needs to find the new him. To make him stronger.
And he found it.
A person is stronger when they seeks to protect someone.
He found someone who he would protect. No matter what. Eventhough his life was on the line.
He change. From someone who was being afraid being with others to someone who would protect and hold them dearly and never let they go.
Well, I'm still searching for the new me.
