Chapter 1:
I remembered it like it was yesterday.
“I would like to thank every class for contributing to the clean-up for Earth Day! You all did great! But only one class gets the prize, and that goes to Ms. Dawn’s fifth graders!” The principal shouted, I didn’t really realize what was going on until my friend Zach was shaking me and jumping up and down.
“Kayce, Kayce, Kayce! We won!” Zach screamed. I hadn’t been feeling great that day but I didn’t want him to know, he always worried about me.
I plastered on a smile and as good as I could said, “That’s awesome Zach, now our class gets….gets….”
“Come on Kayce, were you not paying attention? We get new class computers, new desks, and a pizza/ice cream party!"
“Oh yeah sorry, that is great,” I murmured, I had a slight tickle in my throat and coughed to make it go away.
But the tickle wouldn’t go away and now neither would the cough, soon I was on the ground holding my stomach, everything hurt so badly. Tears were streaming freely down my face.
“Kayce, Kayce?! Ms. Dawn! Someone! HELP! I don’t think Kayce is okay!” I heard Zach screaming. People started surrounding me, I felt light-headed, but the cough was still coming strong.
“Kayce? Can you hear me? Kayce!?” Someone was shouting at me but my eyes felt glued shut, “Kayce! Is your mom or dad home?”
“No,” I started to say, but the coughing became coughing up blood.
“Someone call 9-1-1! She’s coughing up blood!”
I heard adults start giving orders but everything was chaos and in the noise I tried opening my eyes. The sun was shining in, the coughing and blood had stopped but tears were still coming making everything blurry. Shortly after I heard ambulances, the noises all seemed to become one then and my head couldn’t handle it, I passed out.
I awoke in a plain blue room, all I heard was beeping noises, and then someone walked in.
“Kayce, my baby, your awake!” It was my mother, “Mike honey! Kayce’s awake!” My mom yelled down the hallway.
My dad’s footsteps came running toward my room, he was shouting, “Kayce, my princess! Thank God you woke up!”
When my dad came in I tried to smile at the two people I loved most, but my whole body hurt. Everything hurt, especially my lungs, which felt like they were on fire.
A petite nurse walked in then and smiled at me, “Great to know your awake Kayce, we were running tests while you were asleep and,” she frowned and looked at me with pity in her eyes, “You know I think I should talk to your parents first,”
“Nurse Charlotte, is it, is it that bad?” My mother murmured.
“Let’s go out in the hall and talk okay Mrs. Smith?”
My mother nodded and both her and my dad left with the nurse.
About ten minutes later I heard crying from my mother and yelling from my father. They all came back in, my mother was wiping away her tears, my father’s face was red as a beet.
“Kayce honey,” My mother sighed, “It’s, it’s” she let out a sob and my father enveloped her in a hug.
“I got it Rachel, dear,” My father said to my mother, then turning to me he said, “Kayce, honey, you have cancer,”
I felt like the whole world was falling I tried to get up but my arms were attached to random machines, keeping me in bed. I started screaming and crying, doctors started filing in, they prepared a big needle, and with one look, stuck it in my arm.
Everything became blurry, every sound blurred together, when I looked at everyone in the room they all had one thing in common, written all over their faces. Pity
