As I was leaving I heard Four excuse everyone for a while. I found myself standing at the chasm again. Staring at the water. Four walked through the doors towards me. "If you're here to lecture me about what just happened save your breath. I don't care, and nothing you say will change that." I said staring at the water. "I understand, and I'm not going to lecture you." He started. Before I could say anything back the doors opened again and Eric walked in. "I'll take it from here." He said. Four was about to protest. "It's fine Four." I muttered not caring about what happens after this. Four sighed and walked out. "Kai." Eric started. "Listen I'll tell you the same thing I told Four. If you're going to lecture me save your breath." I muttered. "I'm not going to lecture you." Eric said stepping closer. "Really? Then, what are you doing? Telling me i'm now factionless?" I said as a tear slipped down my cheek. Eric grabbed my arm and turned me towards him. "No. That attitude is pure Dauntless." He said he wiped my tear away with his thumb. "Can you at least tell me what the hell all that was about?" He asked. I sighed, "I didn't want to see her get hurt. She was like a sister to me." Eric looked at me, "She said something about your mother and father." He said. "I doubt you even care. You're just trying to be nice." I muttered.
"Kai." He started. "Does it ever look like I actually try to be nice? The answer is no." I sighed, "Alright. My mom and dad never showed up to the choosing ceremony. My mother said she doesn't care if we leave or stay." I explained. Eric sighed, "Okay. You're going to listen to me alright. You're going to fight your way to the top. You are not going to lose. You are going to try with every bit of you and you are going to make it to the first rank. I don't care what you have to do to get there. Prove those assholes wrong and all of the other ones out there. You don't take shit from anyone, and never bow down." He said. I nodded. He patted my shoulder and walked back out into the pit. A few minutes later I followed.
As I walked in I heard Four announce, "Everyone follow me outside I am going to show you how to shoot a gun." He turned and walked out the back door. Tris turned and stared at me and followed Maddie. I pushed my way to the front of the crowd and followed Four out. I grabbed a gun and picked the first spot while Tris and everyone else stood at the other side.
Tris kept glancing over at me. I returned the first glance with a glare and after that ignored them all. Four showed us the basics of shooting. Where to place the gun and how to aim correctly. The first couple of shots didn't make it onto the board. I heard Eric huff seemingly annoyed. "You can try and hit the target initiate." He said walking over to me. "I'm trying." I muttered. "Well try harder." He snapped. Where the hell did the other Eric go? I pointed the gun and shot. I got the outer edge of the target. "Not good enough." He muttered. I could feel people staring at me. I heard Peter laugh quietly. I glared at him. I pointed the gun at the target and hit exactly in the middle. "Laugh at that asshole." I muttered glaring at Peter. "Good." Eric whispered and walked away. After that whole incident, all my shots made the target. I didn't even look at Maddie. Finally after everyone used up their bullets, Four gave us 5 minutes until it was time to head off. I was about to walk back into the pit when Maddie ran up to me. I tensed when she grabbed my shoulder.
I turned and shoved her hand off of me. "What do you want?" I hissed. I noticed her tense up when I said that. I also noticed that Eric was watching. "I wanted to ask if you'd forgive me." She asked. "Forgive? You? Why would I do that?" I asked bitterly. "Because we've been best friends since year 4." She whispered. "Yeah. So you should have known better. You knew what you said was wrong and completely uncalled for." I snapped. "I made a mistake." she said in a soft voice. "Yeah. I know. We all do." I said and she looked up at me with hope in her eyes. "Like I did when I became your friend." I finished and shoved the doors open and walked away.
I was standing in the pit for a while. Alone. The way I liked it. Tris walked up to me. "I understand what she did was wrong, but you can at least try and forgive her." She said. I saw Eric and the others walk into the pit soon after. I rolled my eyes and looked at Tris. "Yeah, and I could also pretend to like you too, but you don't see me doing that either." I muttered and walked away. In the corner of my eye I saw Eric slightly smirk. I walked and sat at the other side of the pit, and waited for Four to show up again.
