After the dance that we went as dates, we began to grow apart. We were not keeping in touch at all (and going to different schools doesn't help at all) and I'm sorry to say this, but she was kind of in the back of my mind. As the year ended, I began to hang out with a whole group of different people. It all started out when Daniel asked me and my 2 other friends if they would like to escort Daniel's date 's friends to the junior ring dance. Since all I did was hang out with dudes all the time, it would be sort of refreshing to get some experience talking to different girls. It was the day of the Super Bowl when we got to meet all each other for the first time. It was the most awkward moment of my life because the guys were talking to each other on one side of the room while the girls gossiped in the opposite corner. Daniel and his date tried so hard to get us to talk to each other. They were so desperate that they forced us to play a game of truth or dare to kill the elephant in the room, and it surprisingly worked. It was my turn and I wasn't feeling like doing any dares yet because I only knew half the people in the room.
"Truth or dare?" said one of the girls that I potentially was going to court to junior ring. "Truth." I said knowing they were going to ask something like "What's your favorite color?" Or some other form of ice breaker question -but I was totally wrong.
"What do you really think about Christine?"
I was caught off-guard. I forgot that I had met these girls before at the dance that I went with Christine. I had to think up something quick because I can tell on the look on their face that they were truly convinced that we were dating.
"Well..." I said to try to make it sound like I was confident in my answer, "She's a good kid."
Really, that's all you can come up with James?
"No, no, no, no! That's not at all what I meant. Do you like her in like a, you know-"
"She's a really good friend and I thought it would be fun to go to a dance with her." I said to ward off any suspicions of me "cheating" on her.
"Well alrighty then!" One of the girls said. Her face looked like she wanted more, but what was I going to tell her?
So we get to the junior ring dance and I notice this one girl walking through the door. She had pretty blonde hair and wore a red dress and...
Wait, is that who I think it is?
It was. It was Christine. The girl I lost touch with. I felt bad that I didn't talk to her but I was to busy getting my groove on to really feel bad. Later on in the year, I began to hang out more with those girls and got to know them even better, especially one girl- the same girl that was my friend Daniel's date. We began talking over spring break and we realized that we had a lot of chemistry. We went on a couple of dates and I wasn't feeling anymore because we weren't progressing as a couple romantically. She realized it one day and decided to call it off after she tried to convince me that it would all turn better when summer hit. I was in a dark place until I realized that there is one person that I haven't talked to in a long time. One that has always got my back. One that I have known for a long time. One that I can trust. That person was Christine.
