"Thats all, you're dismissed", stated the principal of Menace High. At that, the students that were all seated inside the assembly hall stood up and prepared to leave and go home after a long day of school.
Zayna stood up with the students, her bag prepped on her shoulder. She waited for the sea of students to leave the assembly hall first so she doesn't have to fight her way to the exits. When only a few students remained, she walked towards the exit doors. She was so ready to go home and lie on her bed. Because she was thinking of the heaven that is her comforter and pillow, she zoned out of the world and didn't notice the person in front of her causing them to crash into each other. She quickly stood up, mumbled a quick sorry and practically bolted out of the hall in embarrassment.
Meanwhile, still stood in place, Josh picked up the handkerchief she left.
"Josh!", he hears a familiar voice call. He turns to see his friend Joaquin jogging towards him.
"Hey! I didn't see you there", he said as he came face to face with Joaquin.
"Thats because you were staring at the girl's handkerchief", he teased and Josh just rolled his eyes at his friend. He looked at the handkerchief. On the lower right corner were stitched initials, ZS. He couldn't explain why he wanted to return the handkerchief. Was it to do the right thing or just see someone he only saw a second before she bolted away.
Zayna went home in a records time. She stood by the door, leaning on to it for support as she catches her breath.
"You're home early", her older sister, Zara, says as she sees her.
"I escaped sudden death by embarrassment",she says.
"How bad?",Zara says and raises her eyebrows.
"An eight", she says.
"Tell me everything",Zara says and they both sit down on the dining table with pizza they ordered with the money their mother left because she knew she would work late at the hospital. Zayna told her everything. Once she was done, Zara practically face-palmed.
"You clumsy child. How am i related to you?", she says and Zayna smacks her arm lightly.
"But wait, you didn't see his face?",she shakes her head.
"No. But i knew it was a guy. He had that typical guy perfume", she said and cleaned the table.
"Lets just make sure you don't see him again", Zara teases
Zayna rolls her eyes and walks towards her room. "Hopefully not", she thinks to herself.
The next day, she stood at her locker as she gets her books for next period. Suddenly, someone taps her shoulder. She turns around to see a handsome guy smiling at her, His teeth blindingly white. She stares at him for longer than intended, thinking why would a hot guy be talking to her.
"Excuse me but are you Zayna Shay?",he asks rather casually like he's been asking this often.
"Uhm...yes",she replies curiously. Why does he know her name?
His eyes widen when he hears her reply. He quickly straightens up and reaches for something in his pocket but because he was nervous he had difficulty trying to get it out. Zayna just stood there awkwardly wondering what this boy wants from her.
"You...you dropped this at the assembly hall when we ran into each other",he says rather sheepishly once he pulls out a handkerchief. She was shocked to see that it was hers, her initials even neatly sewn on it. She stares at it for a while but takes it once she sees him staring at her.
"Thanks",she says not looking at him
"No problem. I'm Josh by the way",he says and she can see that he extended his hand for her to shake.
"Zayna", she says and shakes his hand as she finally looks at him. He smiles at her again and this time she didn't know why she smiled back.
"Anyways, i gotta go. See you around",he says and waves goodbye before disappearing.
"Oh...okay", she said. She didn't know why she was so disappointed. The same with Josh who didn't know why his heart was beating so fast but his smile never leaving his face.
