It was like he roles were reversed and now it was Zayna who was avoiding Josh. But this time, no one told her to. This time, she wanted to.
She absent mindedly roamed the school grounds as she linked arms with her sister and Chris. It was fair day. Tons of booths were lined up until the very end of the school as students were scattered everywhere.
It was a happy day for students. A day without stress of school work and tests. A day without uniforms.
Zayna felt comfortable in her sleeveless shirt and jeans. Her hair was fixed and held together with a yellow bandana. Her red sneakers dragging the ground.
"Cheer up, Sis! Its fair day!", her sister cheered with joy and Chris agreed.
Zayna smiled at them, determination in her eyes. She wont let Josh ruin her day. She was going to enjoy it.
They spent the whole day roaming the campus as they entered different booths. They played games and bought a lot of useless things.
They were heading towards the concert area. There was a local band playing and they wanted to go up front.
Chris froze on the spot while they were walking. Since their arms were linked, Zayna and Zara stopped and looked at him.
"Hey, you guys head on. I'll be right back",he says but his eyes were set on somewhere else... or someone else.
Zara headed on.
"You okay?",Zayna asked him
"Yeah, just gotta talk to someone",he says. She nods as he walks off. Zayna follows his direction with her eyes and sees that he was talking to Joaquin. Zayna was filled with delight. Yes, she ships them. Shut up.
She was going to go find her sister when someone pulled her hair, causing the bandana on her head to fall off. She spin around to see Mitch, her face red.
"You bitch!", Mitch yells at her.
Zayna's good mood was ruined. She looked at Mitch with a bored face.
"Oh fuck off, Mitch. What is it this time?", she says
"Because of you, Josh broke up with me!!",she yells. A couple of people were already watching there exchange.
"I'd rather not cause a scene but its a good thing that Josh had the right mind to break up with you",she was gonna walk out but Mitch grabbed her wrist.
"Don't you dare walk away, bitch! You just want Josh all to yourself!"
Zayna slapped Mitch's hand away from her wrist.
"Josh can have anyone for all i care. He just needs to make sure that she's not a cheating whore like you!",Zayna raises her voice and the people that surrounded them start murmuring to each other, judgemental eyes all looking at Mitch as she turns redder in embarrassment.
"You man stealer!", Mitch says in rage and slaps Zayna. Zayna slaps her back and they engage in a wild cat fight. The people that surrounded them didn't even dare to stop them. Strong hands pushed them off of each other.
"Thats enough!", Josh yells at the both of them. He looks at Mitch.
"I cant believe you would go this low. We're done, Mitch. And don't you dare lay another finger on Zayna again"
"I hate you!",Mitch attempts to push him but given his strong and muscular figure, she was only able to make him move slightly. She storms off the other direction. Zara appears and pulls Zayna out of the scene.
"Zayna, wait!",Josh calls out
He grabbed her hand.
"Go...I'll follow shortly",she said to Zara who looked hesitant to leave her but nodded and slowly walked away.
She faced Josh, her face unreadable.
He looked at her and combed his hair with his hand.
"Look, I'm sorry about Mitch"
"I could handle someone like her", she said.
"I know. But still she didn't have to take it out on you"
"Well, at least you broke up with her"
"Yeah...Chris showed me the place they were making out. I caught them in the act", he clenched his jaw. Zayna gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
"I'm just glad to have my bestfriend back",Zayna cringed at the word.
Friend...
"Josh...",she trailed off
"...i don't...I don't know if we're still friends",she said
He gave her a confused look.
"What?"
"Its just...",she let out a frustrated sigh. She didn't know why tears were forming in her eyes.
"I'm sorry, Josh"
She ran away. She didn't care if she left Zara or Chris. She just had to get away. Get away from her thoughts. Her confusing mind. Her feelings.
