I wake up to the feeling of a hand shaking my shoulder my eyes ease open and I try to move around but can't due to the cramped airplane seat. "We're going to land soon so get everything ready....Olivia, are you listening to me?" I look at my dad, "yea sure." He looks at me with his sad eyes, "It'll get better Olivia we're starting a new life here we'll be happy." He's really trying I tilted my head towards the window "no, dad no matter what it'll never be the same as before." I didn't need to look at him to know how he looked. Sadness, desperation, anger, who could blame him after everything that's happened, those are the only feelings that are left.

I shiver slightly from the cold, Gustavus, Alaska. As I look through the window all I see are trees. Trees and snow. I suppose this is where our "new start" will begin a secluded forest with depressing weather and strange people. Yea this will be great.

We take a right onto a dirt road and up ahead was a beautiful two story house. It looked like a majestic cabin from a story, inside it definitely looked like something you took out of a brochure. We entered and a grand chimney was on the upper left of the house, with hand crafted furniture and a cozy feeling. "Wow this place hasn't changed a bit, this brings back good memories." you can tell my dad had the sound of regret in his voice. I excused myself to go upstairs to start unpacking while I let him reminisce himself with the house.

I take my suitcase upstairs, take a left once on top and look through the rooms. I end up taking the room at the end of the hall it was rather big considering it wasn't the master bedroom. It had an old looking bed that probably hasn't been changed with new sheets in years, it smelled of wood(not surprising), and bench right next to the window. I walked towards it and wiped away the dust from the window I could see our backyard, trees as far as the eye can see and mountains. Complete solitude...

Maybe this won't be so bad.

I walk downstairs and I see dad looking at some pictures on top of the chimney his hand reaches to his face and wipes away tears, at least that's what it seems like. I quietly walk back to the top of the stairs and then start walking down them again except louder. "Dad I unpacked my suitcase can you open the car so I can get the rest of the luggage?" He put the picture frame back on the chimney, "Sure Olivia don't worry I'll get the luggage out of the car you just stay here" he walked out back into the snow.

I stared at the door for a few seconds and then my attention went to the picture frame on top of the chimney. I walked over and reached towards it an old picture with a man and a child was on it. The older man had facial similarities to my dad and the child was one of the few pictures of my father's childhood. My fingertips touched the glass, "grandpa what would you say if you saw me now? Would you be ashamed of what happened?" I put the frame back and turned around. This house that once belonged to you.

Dad came back inside with a pile of luggage at hand. "Olivia don't just stand there we have to unpack and clean the house for tomorrow."

"Tomorrow? Dad it'll only be me and you for grandpa's memorial we can clean later." I made my way towards the couch and sat down. "Sorry to disappoint but the Adams will be joining us tomorrow," he finally managed to put all of the luggage down, "Adams? Were they grandpa's friends?"grandpa never mentioned them before and their name didn't ring a bell. "No, Michael Adams is my childhood friend he was like a brother to me when I was younger, he knew your grandpa he was like a second son to him."

I stood up from the couch and started to get more luggage, "alright alright i'll help get everything ready, besides it'll make no difference really, you, me, Mr. Adams, and his wife." got my dad's luggage and started to walk upstairs. "Well Olivia they also have three kids around your age." I stopped midway up the stairs, "oh, okay. I think i'm gonna skip dinner tonight and go straight to bed do you think you can clean without me?" I knew this was unreasonable but I wasn't ready to meet anyone my age just yet. Dad figured out where I was coming from and nodded. I continued up the stairs with luggage at hand unprepared for tomorrow.

Sorry if it seems short, but I'll try to make it longer next time. Please comment and give feedback to make this story a lot better. Thanks!!!
