"Why can't the Lightwood family deal with it on their own?"

Amelia Blackthorn, the oldest child in the London Institute, asked in annoyance. Amelia was a cousin of the Blackthorn children who had come to live with her and her father at the end of the war not too long ago.

Her father glared at her across the table. "We have been over this. They need all of the help they can get, especially in medical fields. Iratzes can't heal everything. You are also advanced in your training, and they need a lot of security now, with the Morgenstern boy staying with them. Plus, you are of age to start traveling to different Institutes. It will be good for you."

"But Dad-"

"You are going. End of discussion." He said finally.

The Blackthorn children ate their breakfast in silence, now use to these types of arguments. Amelia stopped, knowing that it is nearly impossible to win an argument like this with her father.

After breakfast, Amelia began packing for the trip. She didn't know how long she would be staying, so she packed all of the clothes she could fit, as well as her gear, weapons, and some personal items.

She spent the rest of her last day in London in the library where it was quiet enough for her to be alone with her thoughts.

When she didn't show up to dinner, her father sent the children to find her. He may be hard on her, but he loved and worried about her just as much.

Julian Blackthorn and his parabatai, Emma, eventually found her still in the library. Amelia admired their bond, for she did not have a parabatai, or even a close friend. She warmed up to Emma quickly after meeting her, and considers her family just as much as her actual family. They quietly sat in chairs across from her by the fire. It was a few moments before anyone spoke.

"I know how you feel about Jonathan Morgenstern..." Amelia said carefully.

"He killed people, he took my family from me." Julian said sternly. For someone so young, he held so much pain in his heart.

"I know, and I am so sorry." Amelia quietly said. She could not say she understood, because she was trained to deal with grief, and was not very close to Julian's parents.

Julian let out a long sigh. "They say he is a different man. Perhaps, someday, I will be able to forgive him." Julian had always been the forgiving one, no matter the circumstance. He saw the best in the worst. Emma never understood it. She didn't think she could ever forgive what had happened, for the amount of pain given to her best friend.

They sat in a comfortable, understanding silence for a few moments.

"So, are you going to join us for dinner? Your father is pretty impatient." Emma eventually asked.

This time, Amelia sighed. She looked at the fire, then back at her cousins. She could not believe how old they looked, especially with the shadows across their faces and the glow of the fire.

"No, I'm okay. You guys go," She said.

They nodded and walked out of the room, hand in hand.

Amelia knew how they felt about her spending time around Jonathan Morgenstern. She had really bonded with her cousins in the last few weeks, and they were very upset when they first found out. They begged her to stay, to find a reason to convince her father to not make her go help the evil man.

She did not know if she will forgive him. She did not know what he will be like, or if he is truly a different person. She did not know how the Lightwoods will welcome her into the Institute. For the first time in her life, she didn't know. And it scared her.

The following morning, Amelia woke up early with her back aching. She had fallen asleep in the chair in the library, by the fire, so her face also felt warm. It was early November now, a little over a month since the end of the Mortal War.

She had been prepped for her stay in New York. She learned about everything that has happened with the people of the Institute in the past years, knew the names of everyone, the demons and Downworlders in the area, etc. She also knew that Jonathan Morgenstern has been in a coma since they brought him back from Hell, which means he has not been questioned by the Silent Brothers or proven himself harmless. That is the reason why she was going in the first place. She is also well-known for interrogation skills, so they wanted her to be there for the questioning.

Amelia quietly trudged to her bedroom to change her clothes, because she knew that she had to pass the rooms of many sleeping children to get there. She changed into something she thought would be intimidating, even for a Shadowhunter, she guessed to give a good first impression. She didn't exactly remember why she wanted to do that, she was just tired.

About ten minutes before it was time for her to say goodbye to her family and portal to New York, she brought her two small suit cases downstairs. She said her goodbyes to her family. The youngest of her cousins cried a little, as did her father. One of the warlocks of London opened the portal for her, and she stepped through, the only thoughts of the New York Institute in her head.

A/N: I know this was short, but I wanted to save the rest for the next chapter. I don't know when that will be published because I don't have a writing schedule, but hopefully soon. Also, thanks to the people putting my story in their reading lists! I hope you enjoy the rest of the story. Happy Reading!
