"Uuuuuurgh....."
Starmind groggily opened her eyes. Her sight was blurry. Her limbs were numb.
"Three moons..." she trailed off.
She tried to move her aching wings. She couldn't.
Her vision focused. She was against a wall in a cave. Some other dragons were around as well. She got the feeling that she would not want to wake them. Or could not. Either way it was pretty horrifying.
Her wings were, like, chained or nailed through to the wall. What she gets for going off on some intercontinental journey.
Starmind groaned.
A voice pierced the air.
"Well hello there."
"Hrrrrrrrnggg...." Starmind replied.
"Finally stirred, eh? You got a name?" The dragon called.
They approached. Out of the haze appeared a pale green dragon with a double horn growing out of his head.
"H..Hibiscus?" Starmind asked. The dragon chuckled.
"Now that there sounds like a PlantWing name. Hey, wasn't the hero that arrived with his group of foreign friends named Hibiscus? What a coincidence."
"No, no....not Hibiscus." Starmind said, "Starmind."
The other dragon laughed.
"Mouthful of a name. I'm gonna call you Star. N' by the way, the names Sage. My family was all into one-syllable names. We was low-borns."
Sage's piercing thoughts came rushing into Starmind's head.
She groaned.
"Those are some pretty scales you got there. Maybe when the Queen's done with you she'll let me have some of those sparkles. Take those wings, hang 'em up..."
"Three moons, you are creepy. What Queen?" Starmind snapped.
Sage recoiled.
"Feisty one. I mean, the only Queen, Her Highnessty the Majestic Queen Magnolia of the PlantWings. Phew, I had to memorize that title when I was only your age, Starbrain."
"Star-you know what, nevermind." Starmind said exasperatedly.
"Starbrain, I think you're not too fond of me." Sage scolded.
"Yeah, I'm really not." she muttered.
"What was that?"
"Nothing, nothing. Do you know where my friends are?" She asked.
"Not particularly. The Queen woulda put them uppin here if they was of any use questinin'"
Oh no.
"Er...well, do you think you could let me go?" Starmind asked. Sage snorted.
"Of course not! Treason to the Queen, acourse."
"Yeah, I didn't think so. But hey, could you maybe tell me about PlantWings...or whatever place I'm in."
"Sure. Your heresabout in the Queen's chamber, in the PlantWing palace. In the forest on the island of Deucalion. There be five tribes a this place: The PlantWings, the FaeWings, AveWings, AstroWings and...the StoneWings. We is at war with the StoneWings, yassee? Mosta the dragons in here are StoneWings. The FaeWings are our allies, sneaky little buggers. AstroWings don't make themselves known 'round here, they go and study the stars. AveWings fly round the sky all day and don't interact with no one. StoneWings live in the volcano o'er yonder and dig up jewels." Sage explained.
"Why are you at war?" Starmind asked.
"Well, them StoneWings went and said that our territory was theirs, 'n they be tryin' to take the forest-edge and Applecrest Mountain back for themselves. Queen Magnolia was gone have nunna that. She sent a messenger to them StoneWings but 'e got murdered."
Sage was sharpening some kind of rock on a long stick.
"Is...is that a spear?" Starmind's voice quavered.
"Sure is, but ain't for you. Naw, Queen's got us dungeon-dwellers trying to break the diamondscales for years. They're nasty, but they work." Sage chuckled.
Sage's mind buzzed with dull thoughts.
"Hey, Sage?"
The PlantWing looked up.
"Yes?"
"You're going to die soon." Starmind said.
Sage snorted.
"Sure I will. You'll die sooner than me, though. Queen'll make me grow herbs outta your snout-holes or something."
"No, I mean she's going to execute you soon."
Sage looked up, mind crowding with questions.
"How you be knowing this? Are you an AstroWing? Nah, not the right build. Stay outta the futures!" He yelled.
Hopefully this would work.
"Sage, listen. The Queen is going to execute you for treason. You're gonna let me go. It's the only possible future. Or... you might wanna step back for this one."
Starmind breathed a plume of flame in Sage's face. The PlantWing yelped and scrambled back.
"I'll grow herbs out of your tongue if you try that again!" He yelled.
"And I'll burn those up as well." Starmind hissed lowly. "So you're going to unshackle my arms and unpin my wings and let me go or I'll burn your snout off."
Sage chuckled.
"Well sweetheart, I'll give you your intimidation is a little swanky for a-what are you, five? Anyhow, you and your little fake stuff ain't gone rattle me."
The PlantWing took a couple steps back, out of reach from Starmind's breath range.
"Listen. You're going to do what I say."
Sage scrambled back.
"Witch! I'll-I'll-" he was cut off when his eyes turned completely white and his claws trembled towards Starmind's chain.
A silver keychain was produced out of a pouch around Sage's ankle.
Sage trembled the key towards the shackles on Starmind's arms. It turned loose, and with a clank her arms were free.
Then, Sage, moved over to the pins stuck through her wings. With a yank and a bit of pain, Starmind was flapping around and trying to dash out of the cave.
Sage unlocked the iron door barring the entrance. The PlantWing waved Starmind out, but not before a weird sensation overcame her.
She turned around and grabbed Sage's neck. A weird groan escaped him.
With a cold jerk of contempt, Starmind snapped his neck. She breathed fire all over the body and, without another glance, whirled out of the room, leaving the corpse to blaze to ashes.
