I ran back in the house. My stepfather was lying on top of my uncle. There was blood all over the both of them. For a few moments, my heart stopped. My mother stood sobbing. It was silent and nobody moved. Then, finally, my uncle climbed out from underneath the motionless body. "What happened?" I asked panicking. We could hear the sirens racing towards the house. My uncle called Dinah and told her to come to the station. The cops arrested him and my mother. I was brought to the station for questioning. "So what took place today?" The detective asked me. "We went to get my stuff and he threatened to shoot us and I ran out of the door." I answered. "So the deceased was your stepfather?" She asked. "Technically but he is more the devil." "Why do you say that?" "He raped me. He raped me for years until I actually succeeded in running away." "Do you have proof?" I showed her the imprint of a ring from the last time he touched me. A male detective came in and sat with us. "So why were you and your uncle at the house at the time of the murder?" He asked. "It wasn't murder, it was self defense. My uncle was taking me to get the rest of my belongings." "He doesn't have the authority to take you out of your home." "He didn't. I ran away. He is going to take custody of me." A detective opened the door. "Lauren, your mother is gong to rehab. Your uncle has been released. You'll be staying with him until you're eighteen. Then you may go where you please." I gave the detectives a smart smile and left the room. Camila stood up when i walked out of the room. "Are you okay?" I nodded and we hugged. My uncle came out of the room he was in, wearing new clothes. "Let's go home." He said wrapping his arm around me. Before stepping out of the door, I noticed a missing child's report. "Guys, come here." I said. Camila's face was on the flyer. "I guess he noticed." Camila said. The cop at the desk noticed us looking at it. When she seen Camila, she told her to have a seat. "Sweetheart, your father's at work so he's sending his friend to pick you up." The cop said. A little while later, the friend arrived. "I was told to give you extra punishment tonight." He said grabbing her by the arm. Luckily, the detective heard him. "She doesn't want to go with you." I said snapping at him. The detective got up. "Okay, you go here. Sir, go over there." She said, pointing to different rooms. We went into the same room I was in before. The same detective came in. "So What the hell does that guy mean by 'I was told to give you extra punishment tonight'?" He asked as he sat down. "My father has been paying him to rape me everyday for the last month. Which is why i ran away." Camila said. "I don't wanna go home. I wanna live with Lauren." The detective got up and went to the other room. "Sir, you're facing multiple years in jail. But if you give us your boss, we'll only give you three quarters of your original sentence." He told him. The guy nodded. "I'll take it. What do i do?" The detective pulled out his cell phone. "Call him and get him to admit to it." The detective said. Camila's dad's friend took the phone and called his boss. "Hey Boss." "Hey, did you pick her up?" "Yes." "Excellent. I'll be home late tonight. Do what you have to do to get her to learn her lesson. Double Pay. Bye." "Bye sir." He hung up the phone and the detective questioned him once more. "Why did you do this?" He asked. The man didn't say anything and the detective arrested him and sent others to go get Camila's dad. The detective came back into our room. "Your father and his friend are facing Rape 1 and endangerment of a child. Would you like to testify?" He asked. "Not Really." Camila answered. "Okay well write your statement down and you won't have to be at court."The detective left and called Uncle Gordon. Uncle Gordon came back toward the room. "I was called by Detective Lynerd to come down." He told a cop. "Mr. Gordon how would you like to take two girls home today?" "I'd be honored to." My uncle said. Camila had to fill out some paperwork and so did my uncle. About an hour later, we were free to go to a happy home. On the way home, we stopped and grabbed our stuff from the hotel. Dinah and Uncle Gordon helped carry some stuff into the house. My new aunt was home whenever we came home. "Lauren, I've heard so many great things about you." She said. "It's so good to finally meet you but upset under these circumstances." We hugged. "Aunt Milika, this is Camila." I said as they hugged. "You guys will be getting the guest bedroom." Uncle Gordon said. Dinah laughed. "I guess it's no longer a guest bedroom." We all laughed. My uncle and I decided to take a walk. "How do you feel?" He said. "I feel happy. I'm away from my terrible life and ready to start a good one. Uncle Gordon, I need to say thank you. Thank you for bringing me into your home and taking care of me and Camila. I know she's a stranger." I said as we sat on tree stumps. "Lo, it's my job to protect you. I promised your father that I'd protect you. I've broken that promise. Now i need to make up for it. And Camila's fine. She's your girlfriend. She would've been a part of this family eventually." We hugged and started walking back towards the house. When we returned, I seen that Camila had unpacked most of our stuff. "Hey, I would've done this. You didn't have to." I said putting my arms around her waist. "No, I wanted to." She said putting her arms around my neck. "This feels right." She said. I said, "I know", then leaned in for a kiss. She met me in the middle. "Okay, you lovebirds, it's time for dinner." Aunt Milika said knocking on the door and peering her head in. For dinner she made, ham and mashed potatoes with cream corn. "Aunt Milika, this meal looks amazing. Thank you." I said. She winked at me. As the food began to dance around the table, I decided to make a toast. "Um guys, I'd like to say something." i said. They all looked at me even the two little girls. "I know all of this is sudden. I didn't expect all of this to happen but I'm so glad it did. Uncle Gordon, thanks again. Aunt Milika we just met but I already love you so much." She took my hand for a moment. "Lacey and Stevie, I hope you guys will accept Camila and I as your older cousins." The four year olds smiled and nodded their heads like Headbangers at a rock concert. "Dinah, I hope we can be as close as we were as kids. And last but not least, Camila, in the somewhat short time that we've known each other, I've fallen for you. We did only meet a few days ago and we have moved rather fast but I'm honored that you are my girlfriend." I sat down as I winked at her. She blushed. "Lauren, that was an amazing toast. I'm thankful that you're my niece. Now, let's eat." Aunt Milika said. After dinner, I helped start cleaning up. "Do you girls wanna go for a walk?" Aunt       Milika asked. "We'll let them finish cleaning up." Lacey and Stevie were already outside waiting for us before she finished her sentence." Lo, can I hold your hand?" Lacey asked me. As she grabbed my hand, Stevie took my other hand. When we started walking, however, she let go of my hand and ran over and took Camila's. I looked over and there was a huge bright smile on her face. There it is, I thought, the best smile in the entire universe. She makes me smile. I'm happy. For the first time in a long time, I'm happy. We all sat on tree trunks. "Girls, let's get to know each other a little more." Aunt Milika said. "I like cheese and using crayons!" Lacey screamed. "Not you, sweetie. Why don't you go play wizards or something?" She said picking up two sticks and handing them to the girls. The girls went over to a clearer area. "So now we can talk." Aunt Milika said. Camila started talking about her life and everything first. As she spoke, I could only focus on her. My mind was clear of everything else except her voice. But as soon as she stopped talking, all the thoughts and feelings came rushing back. We were sitting outside for what seemed like hours. Dinah came out to get the twins because they had fallen asleep. It must've been four or five in the morning when we went in the house. As I lad down next to Camila, I felt a tear dance down my cheek. She must've heard my sniffle. "Hey what's wrong?" She said rolling over to face me. "C'mon tell me." She wiped my tears away. "I'm not used to the whole family thing and I fear its all gonna come crashing down." I said. We sat up. She took my hand. "I'm not used to the whole family thing either, but we'll get used to it. The only thing left to fear is fear itself. I'm here. You're here." She said. We eventually drifted off to sleep.
