The first thing I did was call him. I couldn't believe that I was the last one to find out it was unreal honestly. Out of all the people here in this small town I, Elizabeth Marie Greenfield, was the last person to know. I feel so bad I mean I’m suppose to be there for him, always.
I called his cell I got no answer I probably should have checked on him after school when he wasn't there on Monday and Tuesday. The kid never gets sick so I should have known something was was wrong but I also don't know if it’s just a rumor too, I just need to see for myself. I approached the door, I could hear my heart pounding so loud it blocked out everything even the ding of the doorbell. Next thing I knew the door swung open and there stood Mr. Jenkins, he had such a depressing look on his face.
“He’s upstairs in his room” He said before I had a chance to say anything.
I nodded, stepped inside the house, and headed for the stairs. It seemed so different from the last time I was in this house, I’ve been there a thousand times. I heard my feet echo after every step I took up the stairs. I remember one time when I was running down them, I tripped, fell, and sprained my ankle, his mom was there to help me she was like my second mother.
I was just outside his bedroom door and I didn't think to knock, I just walked in. There he was sitting on his bed. It was unmade, and his room was a complete mess. I’ve never seen it this messy before. I looked at him, his eyes made contact with mine. They had absolutely no life in them, they were such a dark blue that it almost made them looked black. They were swollen and red, like he had been crying just before I walked in.
I opened my mouth so say something but nothing came out, I just felt my self walk toward him and sit next to him and give him a hug. I could tell he needed it. He instanly hugged back.
“I’m…. I’m so sorry” I told him holding back the tears I had.
He just hugged tighter. “I know I should have came earlier than I did but…” I said as he backed out of the hug and stared at me.
“I know” He said almost a whisper
We sat there in silent which seemed like forever, I looked at him and said “You need food” I smiled.
He smiles. I knew just the place to go, Pizza Hut. We’ve been there way too many times, but we both love pizza, so I thought it was a good idea. “Come on. Get up” I started walking towards him, and I pulled him to his feet. He almost gave out a laugh, and we made our way down stairs. I found his dad at the kitchen table. Almost smiling when he saw Jake behind me.
“We’re gonna go out to eat would you like to come with?” I asked
He looked from me and to Jake. “Nah, I’ll stay back I have work to catch up on.” He forced a smile.
“Okay, well bye. Have fun.” I cracked a smile. I turned around to Jake and pushed him towards the door. He laughed, I smiled and got my keys and put my flip flops on and we headed out the door. “We’ll take my car, okay?”
I got no answer and opened my car door and got in he got in the passengers side and closed the door, leaned forward and put the radio on. I backed out of the driveway and headed toward Broadway. Once I parked we got out, he looked at me, and smiled, finally put some life back into his eyes. He held the door open for me and when we got in my feet automatically going toward our window booth in the far right corner. It was where we always sat, because the booth was our favorite spot in this place.
Who doesn't like window seats.
