It was their one year anniversary. Hermione was quite looking forward tonight as she put a lot of work into surprising him. She told Ron that she was going to be at the library getting a book but in reality, she did something she would usually never do. She bought some champagne (they were seventeen, legal adults in the wizarding world, and in their last year of school) and smuggled it into the school through one of the secret passageways. Also, she got some picnic blankets and went down to the kitchens to grab their favourite treats so they could eat outside later. To be quite honest, she liked Ron a lot and although he could be annoying and dumb at times, he was quite endearing.

Opening the portrait door and entering the common room, she was pretty excited. Ron was a pretty good kisser (but to be fair, she didn't have anything to compare it to), even if he did use way too much tongue, and she was sure that tonight would be pretty hot and heavy.

Not seeing Ron in the common room, she assumed he must be in his room, lounging on his bed or perhaps even taking a nap. She climbed the stairs before a sound stopped her straight in her tracks. A moan. A throaty moan and kissing sounds came from the Gryffindor boys' room. Her heart flew up into her throat and her heart suddenly started to beat erratically in panic. But she shook her head silently and knew that Ron could not possibly be cheating on her, after all, he loved her. Ah yes, she thought to herself, it's probably Seamus or maybe even Dean with their latest conquest. She knew that the two boys have been trying to get experience and have shagged at least half the girls in their year. She chuckled silently at the fact that she almost thought it was Ron. What a joke.

But at the edge of her mind, a small wisp of hesitation and doubt entered. What if it was Ron? Probably not but the only thing that would ebb her fears would be to just enter the room, right? She convinced herself that it was the right thing to do. She'd probably see Seamus naked or something but a little bit of embarrassment would be better than having these doubts.

So she pushed open the door confidently, expecting to see Seamus or even possibly Dean but most definitely, not Ron. She gasped in shock at seeing Ron ride Lavender passionately and kissing her neck, and telling her she was beautiful.

Ron glanced up and his eyes met with hers. His eyes widened and he immediately stopped what he was doing.

He got up from the bed, pulled on his trousers, and said, "Hermione this isn't what it looks like!"

Hermione scoffed, what a lame excuse, "Please. Save me the excuses Ronald, I know a cheater when I see one".

"Hermione no, please this was just a one time thing, I'm sorry", He said, pleading.

"I can't believe you", She snarled, can't even believing that her boyfriend of one year cheated on her with the tart.

"I'm sorry, please forgive me", Ron said.

"I can't Ronald", She said coldly, refusing to let her hurt show.

"You bitch", He muttered, "You're lucky I even stayed for that long".

"What?!" Hermione said, hearing what he was angrily muttering.

"You're lucky I even stayed that long", He said, knowing that she would never forgive him and he may as well just let out the truth right now.

"Huh?" Hermione said, truly confused. She thought Ron loved her.

"Our relationship was just a lie", He said honestly, he knew their relationship was trash and it was about time she knew it too.

"Excuse me", Hermione said, still confused.

"Mum asked me to date you and Dumbledore insisted. Apparently, muggleborns are at great risk right now and if I dated you, you'd be safe as it'd be known knowledge that you had a pureblood, albeit a blood traitor, backing you up", He said, his voice going softer, "I love you Hermione, I really do. But not in the same way, you're more like a sister to me".

Hermione's heart broke in two. Her entire relationship with Ron had been a lie just to protect her. She was grateful that Ron was trying to do the good thing but she was also furious, she could not believe Ron didn't just tell her and save her the pain of a broken heart. She wouldn't have been that mad if she knew early on but now she just looked like the fool who fell for his charms.

"Fuck you", She growled, really mad at him now.

"Hermione, it's the best for you", He said, trying to placate her.

"I can't believe you, I can't even trust you anymore", She barked out.

"Wait where's Lavender?" She wondered suddenly, realizing that the brunette must have been listening to their entire conversation. She did not want this to go out to the whole school.

"Lav-Lav left when you saw us. She knew this might've happened so we discussed a plan beforehand", He explained.

Hermione saw red again, "I thought it was just one time with her?!"

"You deserve the truth. I've been seeing Lav for the entire year, I'm sorry", He said, looking down at his shoes.

"Why", She asked simply, a tear running out from her eye.

"You're not my type", He stated, crushing her heart with those four words.

"What? You only like dumb sluts?" She taunted, not being able to help herself when there was such a good opportunity to say something mean.

Ron growled, "Lav isn't a slut. I love her in a way I never loved you. She's gorgeous, perfect figure, perfect eyes. She's funny and best of all, she's easy going. She's not uptight like you or intimidating or boring or frumpy".

Hermione bolted from the room. Ron's insults were too much for her. She just wanted to get back to her dorm and cry alone with a bowl of Ben and Jerry's.
