What if Draco asked Hermione to the ball before Krum?
Hermione was sitting in the library, in her favourite spot, pouring over her Ancient Runes text book and scribbling furiously when Draco sat beside her. She paid him no mind, not wanting to ignite an argument while she was working. He also, didn't make a sound, and just worked silently beside her.
The next day, she sat in the same spot and worked on her Transfiguration homework. And just like yesterday, Draco sat beside her again and worked on his own. They didn't talk but this time Hermione thought to herself, why is Draco sitting beside the mudblood? Yesterday she merely thought there were no seats left but today she looked around and there were. Was this a coincidence or something more?
On the third day, she sat in the same spot again, and worked on her Charms assignment. And just like the day before, Draco once again sat beside her and worked on his own. But this time, Hermione didn't stay silent, she was wondering if Draco had something up his sleeve.
"Malfoy", She said, getting his attention.
"Yes?" He replied politely, which was an incredibly unusual thing for him to do.
"Why are you sitting here?" She said, straight to the point.
"Am I not welcome?" He said, eyes flashing.
"It's a free country, you can sit wherever you want", She shot back.
Then Draco did the unthinkable, he actually laughed. His laugh sent warm sparks up her spine and she realized that she wished that he would laugh more often.
""Alright Granger", He said simply before returning to his own work.
And then the fourth day came and went, then the fifth, and many days after that. Slowly they began to talk, sharing notes, and talking politely. Then at around the ninth day, they started to joke and tease, making friendly banter. Before long, Hermione realized that she actually looked forward to her time in the library with Draco where no one could see them and they could just be themselves. But funnily enough, outside of the library they seemed to have an unspoken agreement to not talk.
And at around the fifteenth day, Draco came in, looking extremely nervous.
"Hey, you alright? You look terrible" She said.
"Malfoys don't look terrible" He snapped back.
She recoiled in shock, she was merely just trying to help, she thought to herself!
"Well geez sorry for being concerned" She said, scowling.
Immediately his face softened, "Sorry that was uncalled for".
She nodded her head, accepting his apology and then they both worked on their History homework pleasantly.
"H-hermione?", Draco said rather timidly.
Hermione whipped her head around. Draco called her by her first name?!
"Yeah?", She replied.
"Would you go to the Yule Ball with me?" He stammered out, looking more flustered than he had ever seen him.
She was shocked, what? Draco wanted to bring a mudblood to the ball? Was this a joke? Admittedly, he had been nice to her for several weeks now but maybe that was all foreplay up to a big prank that would likely humiliate her.
"No thanks" She said calmly even though she desperately wanted to believe that Draco actually liked her.
"Oh okay. Ugh I should've known not to ask you! I know I'm not good enough and liking you and bringing you to the Yule Ball would damage your reputation. Merlin I wish I was a bloody good guy. I wish I could've deserved you but you're right, you need a nice strong stable guy that loves you. Not me, a piece of trash", He said disappointingly to her, eyes shining.
