I awoke to the sound of my mom's muffled wailing. It felt like silence to me though, the sounds of the bustling city didn't seem to register right. There were shards of glass lodged in mom's upper body. With her head in her hands, she rocked frantically back and forth,at least as much as the seatbelt would allow her to. Sunbeams danced through the window, the clouds moving them around as if they were performing the most magnificent shadowgraphy. The beam's dance illuminating the gashes in mom's face, and the ruby red blood trickling carefully down her face.

"Just a dream- just...dream." She choked on air as she muttered to herself, taking quick and empty breaths.

From the back where I sat I could smell the metallic stench of blood, and it seemed I was still buckled in, I look to the driver's seat to see how dad was. His seat was empty, the windshield absolutely shattered, a gaping hole dad's corpse left behind when it flew through it. Dad was dead. I always told him to wear that damn seatbelt.

The paramedics had pulled mom and me from the crash, I could see dad's face was a flattened bloody mess, most likely from the 40 feet of asphalt his face had become very well acquainted with in the accident. I'm not too sure what caused the sudden halt that ultimately threw him out the windshield, but I'm pretty sure mom was in no mood for my questions, as the paramedics had already begun lifting her mangled body into the ambulance.

I held my knees to my chest as I sat on the grass to the side of the road. The air smelled so clean, so fresh, like a lush green forest. It was a nice change from the smells our car was emitting now. It's so peaceful, it's almost as if there isn't a disgustingly overpopulated city a couple miles away.

I somehow wasn't injured, an absolute miracle if I've ever heard of one. Although, given everything else that happened, this should've been the worst day of my life. Yet, it's not. Funnily enough, it turned out this would be the best day of my life. Forgive me for being cheesy, but the first time I saw him, I knew it was love.

He wasn't conventionally attractive by any means. Far from it really, he was a skeleton, or maybe only part skeleton? Regardless, there was just a special something in the way he did what he did. Let me clarify, I'm talking about the Grim Reaper, Death himself, in the flesh. Or should I say in the bone? Anyways, that's beside the point,he had come to guide my dad into the afterlife, what a gentleman.

He's the absolute definition of grace, the gentle continuous stride he kept, and the way each step he took always seems so careful and calculated. Given his whole getup, the black hooded robe and all, it concealed the majority of his figure pretty darn well. He's just as the legends say he'd look, a face stripped of blood, muscle, and skin, all's left is bone.

With the soft wave of his scythe over my father's bloodied corpse, there was a glint of light, no one seemed to notice though. I checked, glanced around to the people who had stopped to watch the accident clean up, the paramedics, my mom even. No one saw him or the light.

The Reaper beckoned to the corpse with a solid movement of his long bony finger toward him and began to walk away from the scene. As he did so, he would glance back a couple times, to check the empty space behind him. Such care he did it with, as if a parent guiding their child, the parent constantly checking to be sure the child is safe. I watch with doe eyes as he leaves with what I assume can be nothing other than my father's soul.

I'm taken out of my trance by the the tapping of my shoulder, I turn to see the interruption was created by one of the paramedics. My mom needs to be driven to the hospital, her injuries were bad enough to need treatment.

The entire drive was just silence, excluding the sounds of the vehicle's wheels against the worn concrete beneath it and the screaming of the siren. Why couldn't anyone else see him? Why did he allow me to see him? Maybe it was all a mistake on his part. I have more questions than answers. All I know is that I need to see him again, that mesmerizing way he carries himself, it's so odd.
