two months had passed since homecoming, and the dance comittee had the task to decorate the gym again. this time, for their winter formal.

ever since montgomery helped with the homecoming decorations, he felt an odd emotion within him. he actually liked helping. so, he offered to help the comittee with winter formal decorations.

it was the night before the winter formal, and elizabeth valentine had stayed after the meet to put up final touches. montgomery de la cruz walked past the gym, holding his baseball track bag on his shoulder. he was exhausted due to all of his drills from baseball practice.

he stopped in the entrance of the gym, seeing elle looking at the stage. monty walked into the gym, unable to resist the blonde haired girl.

ever since the homecoming meets, he noticed that he was starting to see her around school a lot. she only really hung out with jeff atkins and alex standall. maybe hannah baker, but that was it.

he wanted to get to know her, but he knew that if he did, his friends would find out. he did not want elle to associate herself with his immature, reckless friends.

"you have that look on your face." monty said, causing her to jump. elle was so concentrated with her work that she didn't even hear montgomery walk in.

she turned to him and looked at him with confusion.
"what look?" she asked, folding her arms over her chest. her lips were curled into a smile as she was waiting for montgomery to continue.

"that look when something isn't right and you won't stop until its perfect." monty spoke. he noticed that elle was a perfectionist while they were decorating for homecoming. she always had to have things at the perfect centimeter or the perfect inch.

"come here." she said, grabbing monty's hand and pulling him in front of her. when she grabbed his hand, monty felt a million butterflies in his stomach. he looked at the stage, seeing purple string lights across the ceiling above the stage.

"what am i looking at?" he asked. she sighed.
"its not centered." she frowned. monty squinted at the lights. they looked centered to him.

"i don't see a problem." he shook his head. elle walked up the steps of the stage and she sat down. looking at monty, she patted the wooden floor next to her.

"come look at it with me." she said. the sixteen year old boy walked up the stage and sat next to elle. she laid back, and so did he.

her green eyes looked up at the purple lights. she turned her head, trying to find the source of the problem. monty's eyes traveled from the lights to elle.

his lips turned into a smile as he watched her try to determine where she should move the lights. as the lights radiated her skin, he couldn't help but to just watch her.

in that moment, he knew.

elizabeth noticed that monty wasn't saying a word, causing her to look at him. her eyebrows stitched together as confusion stuck her.

"what are you looking at?" she asked. monty shook his head.
"nothing, you just look different under the lights." he said. elle looked at him with a raised eyebrow.

"good different or bad different?" she asked. she was eager to know what montgomery thought of her. she'd noticed that she was beginning to form a crush on him.

"good different." he said, smiling.

in that moment, montgomery knew that he was falling in love.
