I took the books that sparked my interest and started running. I didn't even bother to look at the man.
"Hey, come back here!" They started running towards me. I could hear his footsteps behind me. This made me pick up my pace a bit. There is no way I'm going to let myself get found out tonight! I turned into an alley to try and lose him. He's still on my tail. I look back in front of me and slow down. Why did I have to choose a dead-end?
My pursuer noticed this as well and slowed down a bit. He kneels forward, hands on his knees, as he pants. "You..." Pant. "You sure have good endurance, darlin'." The man before me seems to have a bit of a southern drawl to his voice. He stands back up and takes a step towards me. "You know how to read?"
I look down at the books I hold tight in my arms and then back at him. "Why would it concern you?" I ask him, a bit of sass in my voice. He chuckles.
"Well, it's quite unusual for a beautiful woman such as yourself to know how to read." He steps closer yet again, a bit of light shining on him. It's not enough to see him entirely. "Why don't you step into the light so I can see you, darlin'?"
It seems he can't see me either. "You step into the light first."
"How about we step into the light at the same time?" He proposes.
"Okay." I confirm "On ten."
We then count in unison. "One... two... three... four... five... six... seven... eight... nine." We both step out.
