where you at, mamas
Trevante
I sighed and stared at my blank phone screen. Where would she go? I just feel it that she's about to get in some trouble. I can tell. I got up from my phone and grabbed my maroon leather jacket. I grabbed my small handgun and placed it in my pocket and then closed the door.
"Good evening, Tre," Ms. Burroughs, my long time neighbor said as she tended her garden. She usually gives me some of her extra goods when she collects them in the fall. She was an elder lady but brilliant in knowledge.
"Good evening to you, too," I smiled and continued walking. No car for me today since I won't need it. Toya would only get around on her feet, she doesn't trust cabs or Ubers.
I felt my phone vibrate and saw that Elijah was calling.
"Ay, meet up at The Spot. I know you ain't in it no more neither am I, but Omar said he thinks some shit is gonna happen tonight. Get ahold of Q, too," he said quickly.
"Wait, what?" I stuttered.
"You heard me. Get Quintell and meet us at The Spot," he said roughly and hung up. I groaned and cursed silently.
I pulled my keys from my car and unlocked it. Guess I have to use it now. I quickly called Quintell hoping he'd answer but of course he didn't. Guess I'm gonna show up at his apartment unexpectedly.
I quickly drove there arriving in no time since it wasn't that much far from mine. I jogged out my car but quickly stopped as I saw a cop peer out from the corner. What are these damn dogs doing here? I went up the stairs and knocked on his door rapidly. I heard shuffling and yelling from a child. Damn, I hope I'm not stealing him from his daughter at the moment. The door opened with a confused Q and of course his daughter.
"Delilah, go back in, girl," he said and ushered her back in gently. He looked back at me and nodded his head. "I heard."
"C'mon then," I said. I pointed to my car with my keys in my hand.
"I got a bad feeling about it," he mumbled.
"Me too, but we gotta do what we gotta do."
"We?" Q yelled. "You promised that after that night I wouldn't be in this shit anymore."
"I know," I sighed. "I promise you ain't shit gonna happen. If it does, I'll be there. I swear on my life that I will let you come back to your daughter and girl."
He sighed and rubbed his forehead shaking his head, "What the hell is gonna happen anyway?"
"A lot of shit, brother."
"And Toya is okay with you doing this shit?"
"Well one, I'm not about to be not helping my brothers. You may have not grown close to them like I have because I've been here longer, but no matter what they my brothers. And two, I have no fucking clue where Toya is, but I'm pretty sure she's gonna be in the crossfire."
"Why you think that?" He furrowed his eyebrows and leaned on the porch rail.
"Because somehow she always is," I shrugged. "Just c'mon, I won't let nun happen to you."
He lightly chuckled, "Man, shut up, you sound gay as fuck." I laughed quickly but shook my head. Now wasn't the best time to be laughing.
"I'm being for real though, we need to go," I said.
He nodded, "Ight, I'm coming. Lemme say bye to my girls." I nodded as he disappeared into his place. I stared back at the roads as I saw those cops roam around again. The had their weapons pulled out waiting for something to happen. They better not be in downtown because then we fucked tryna get into The Spot.
