Without thinking, I flung myself to the side of the pavement, crashing into ceramic pots of flowers. I felt them shatter beneath my body and saw people around me jump at the sudden noise. Some ran towards me, shocked. Others carried on with their busy New York lives. Through my blurred vision, I saw the shape of a woman swarming into view."Someone help! She's hurt!" the woman screamed, ludicrously gesturing her hands towards me.
"For goodness sake Helen, she's fine," a male voice interrupted, "It's just another teenager with a skateboarding accident. We talked about this before!"
She asked if I was alright and I grunted in response, trying to stand up. The man gave me his hand and pulled me up, making the shards of ceramic stuck to me fall to the ground. Great, I will so feel this tomorrow. Those bruises will hurt!
"Hello dear, what's your name?" he asked as I brushed off everything that was stuck on my backpack. Hellen went into the shop after she'd seen that I was okay.
"Oh, right," I answered, a little dazed. "My name is Mia, sorry about all of this."
He chuckled and picked up my skateboard. "William Smith, nice to meet you."
His heavy, British accent had startled me. I looked at him carefully, analysing his features. He was wearing a grey tux with a green tie, something common in New York.
Then, my eyes darted into the flower shop. I moaned at the realisation that I'd have to pay for the broken flowers. He seemed to understand my emotions as he gave me a sympathetic smile and waved at Helen, the woman. She waved back from the other side of the window and quickly lolloped out.
"Don't worry darling, I paid for all the damaged flower pots!" she exclaimed, seemingly pleased with herself. I was so, so grateful. She smiled even wider when she saw that my cheeks had flushed pink in gratitude.
For the first time, I saw her outfit aswell- a seemingly blue Victorian dress with what looked like a hoop skirt and lots of puffy layers of fabric.
Well, at least I had found the history convention that people were talking about.
"Thank you so very much for your help," I giggled, making myself sound as if I was addressing the Queen, "But I shall have to go. My school will be starting soon. Nonetheless, it's been a pleasure meeting you." To finish off, I did a slightly exaggerated curtsey and put down my skateboard. It was now her turn to blush.
I was about to go but Helen stopped me. "The flower lady also gave me this as a small gift for purchasing so many flowers. I guess it's a thing they do here in America." She passed me a little box with an artificial flower taped on top of it. "I don't really think I need it so you can have it," she kindly said.
"Oh wow...thank you again," I replied, putting the box into my bag. I nodded at them and smiled once again, then skated past. I was reaaaaally late to school. Mr Johnson would never forgive me if I came in late to class for the fourth time.
My new excuse would be nearly dying under a Victorian women's skirt but of course, knowing Mr Johnson, that wouldn't really amuse him. He'd just add 'a few more detentions' onto my after school schedule. Even if I hated school, I had to keep up my good grades in order to keep Mum and Dad happy. I felt as if it was the only thing that pleased them nowadays. Having lawyers for parents sucked. I sighed, looking at my phone.
7:20 AM
Great. Ten more minutes until class starts and I've still got about twenty blocks to skate through. So if I'm going 9 mph and school is a mile away, it would mean that I'd be there in 6 minutes and forty seconds. With traffic lights and slowing down for people in front of me, the time would be raised to eight minutes. That would give me enough time to run into the school and sit down before the teacher calls out my name on the register. My name is always called out last anyways.
Okay Mia, you can do this. I repeatedly pushed my foot off the ground, gaining proper speed.
"Sorry, coming through!" I yelled, trying to swerve to get past people once more. I flexed my ankles and shifted my weight to turn a corner, the sudden breeze ruffling my hair. I didn't want to jinx it but I felt that I was getting quite good at this whole skateboard thing.
In your face, Alex! Being the protective older brother he was, he thought that I shouldn't be skateboarding because of my shameful balancing skills. I remember him shaking his head in confusion when I continuously fell off it when he had tried to teach me how to stop. Well, too bad. I'll worry about stopping later. Apart from my grazed knees, I didn't have many injuries and was enjoying skateboarding way too much to give it up.
Buildings continued to blur past me until I reached school. Suddenly, a figure blocked my path. I narrowed my eyes and realised it was a boy. It looked as if he had just been hit and was lying on his side, scrunched up in pain. When he saw me swerving towards him at great speed, his grey eyes widened in horror. I gasped.
Ohmygod I'm going to run over him!
I lifted the front of my skateboard by slowly putting my back foot's weight on the tail.
Think about what Alex taught you at the skatepark.
Then, in a singular motion, my heart beating fast, I slid my front foot backwards too, popping the board into the air. As I jumped over him, I noticed that his eyes weren't grey, they were blue. They locked into mine and I grinned, thinking about how badass I looked. But seriously- how the hell is it possible to have such blue eyes? I sighed in jealousy and shifted my front foot forwards once more to flattened the board and it successfully fell to the ground. Joy surged through my body at the realisation of what I had done. Now, I just had to stop. I pushed my right foot down on the floor but thanks to my lucky stars, my shoelace got tangled onto one of its wheels and I fell face first onto the floor.
I heard his voice behind me. "A way to make an entrance," he gruffly said, sarcasm dripping from his mouth.
"Not as amazing as yours," I retorted as I stood up. I bet he didn't know how hard it was to do that with a skateboard. "Are you okay?"
He visibly grimaced, clutching his upper hip. I tried looking at it to see what was wrong but he covered it with both of his hands.
"Right. So I can see that you're not okay. We need to get you to the nurse's office. Can you stand up?"
I saw a frown form on his face once I mentioned the nurse. The moment gave me a chance to gaze at him and his defined features; his angular jaw, distinct cheekbones and tousled light blonde hair. I sighed. Girls would definitely go crazy for him in this school. And no- I hadn't fallen in love with him. I've had enough romance from my brother and his lovesick girlfriends to last me a life time. Anyways, who was he? I'd never seen him in my school before. Okay, he caught me staring. Time to brush off that mistake and act cool.
Slowly, I helped him up, careful not to touch his wound. With him leaning on my right side and my skateboard clutched in my left arm, we hobbled into the school.
"I need Iris," he mumbled through gritted teeth. "Iris North. Do you know her?"
I rolled my eyes. Of course I knew Iris. She's been my best friend since third grade.
"Yes, I know Iris. But the question is do I know you?"
