Five - I Love You - Richpez

I'm quiet, thinking carefully, as I walk back to Joe's hospital room. As I arrive, just before I push open the door, I notice Lauren leaning over him.

"... why do you love him so much anyway? You two fight, and you're stubborn - I mean, it's really up to you, but I wouldn't keep going back to someone who we just keep fighting, you know?"

Lauren sighs and drops her head onto his chest and I almost burst in, but then she starts speaking.

"He - I love him. I know we fight a lot, but he makes me feel so alive, like nothing else can ever make me feel that way." Although her voice is quiet, she sounds assured, and again, I almost walk in, but she keeps talking.

"He's the most special person I've ever met, and he's funny, and beautiful. I -"

Joe reaches up and kisses her.

She stays completely still, and so do I, but maybe it's just because we're both still comprehending it. Joe seems to take this as encouragement, and begins to kiss more heavily, but she still stays absolutely still, and I stay outside the door, waiting for her to shove him off her.

But she doesn't. She just stays the same, still, letting him kiss her, and she's got to be over her shock by now, but she still doesn't move.

It isn't until Joe pulls her closer that I break and stop waiting for her to do something. I fling the door open and Joe sits up hastily, but she still doesn't move.

I swallow.

"What the fuck?"

Her head snaps up and around at the sound of my voice and it is now that she's facing me that I see the tear tracks running down her face, but I am angry.

"What the fuck, Lauren?"

She sobs and slides off the bed into a little ball, rocking herself and letting out little whimpers.

I turn to Joe and realise just how angry I am with him.

"Why would you do that?"

"You don't deserve her."

"Nobody deserves her-"

"You act like you have some big monopoly on her! I have been in love with her since college. College! And I have to watch her argue with you and then take you back as fucking soon as you make puppy dog eyes." He takes a deep breath to yell at me some more.

"And the worst part? She loves you with everything she is and you? You don't give a shit. You-"

"I love her BACK!" I yell, and they both seem taken aback by me responding.

"I love her with everything I am too, Walker! I take her back every goddamn time she makes puppy dog eyes at me! I heard her give you some reasons for why she loves me, and here are mine, Lauren." She sobs again.

"You are honest, and kind, and funny. You make me feel alive too, and you are my special person too. You, Lauren Lopez, are talented and reliable and the most goddamn beautiful thing I've ever seen and ever will. Damnit, Lauren, I love you."

She reaches out to me and I pick her up.

Just before I kiss her, as our lips are about to touch, she whispers, "I love you too," in Nick's Obi-Wan voice.

Joe can't hear what she said, but Joey bursts out laughing so hard he almost drops Lauren.
