"Laurel,Laurel wake up!" My sister Mira called. My eyes flew open as the dream I had just been having was ripped apart and I was plunged into consciousness. I sat up as I looked around my surroundings. We were in the grand foyer and I lay,draped across a blood red velvet sofa with a book resting on my lap. Mira stood beside me,staring down with those luminescent blue eyes,an amused smile playing across her face.
"So this is where you've been hiding"She began,still smiling serenely.
"I wasn't exactly hiding,more like I was avoiding being seen."I joked with a flip of my fiery red hair "Same thing."She replied,giggling not bothering to conceal her fangs,not like she needed to here anyway,but those fangs were a constant reminder of the large gap of difference between us. Mirabelle Draven,or Mira as I called her,was my royal Moroi half sister. We had always been together,from the time we first met which was a long time ago when we were both babies. Even though I was just a lowly Dhampir,the illegitimate child of our Dad, Prince Claude Draven,she and our father had always accepted me. "Laurel look!"She exclaimed interrupting my thoughts as she stared out the window. Following her gaze I turned to the large heavily draped window and instantly spotted what had caught her attention,snow falling from the gray winter sky. "It's the first snow of the year."Mira continued walking over to the window,still gazing at the falling snowflakes ,and with a sigh I followed her lead. I stared out the window at the grounds that were slowly being obscured by a thick blanket of snow,that's when I spotted the shadowy figure,lurking in the shadows of the pine forest that surrounded our mansion. "Strigoi!"I gasped grabbing Mira's arm and yanking her away from the window just as I heard a loud crash followed by a scream coming from downstairs.
"Come on!"I yelled,still holding onto her arm"We'll take the back staircase!" She nodded face ashen and I could see pure terror in her eyes. Together,we raced out of the room and down the large door lined corridor. The house was filled with screams and loud crashes but Mira and I didn't stop to investigate we just kept running. We had almost reached our destination when suddenly and without warning Mira stopped dead in her tracks.
"Dad!" She cried in anguish"He's still in his study,we have to go back for him!"
" But Mira,what if he's surrounded by Strigoi,"I reasoned"How will we fight them? You know I haven't had any Gaurdian training and you haven't even specialized yet!"
"I don't know,but we have to try!"She told me determined. I groaned knowing that I would regret this but what Mira said was true,we had to try.
