The next few days were spent moving all of Awsten's things from his apartment to Geoff’s, contacting the landlord to put Awsten's place back up for rent. It all ran smoothly, and now Awsten was living with Geoff. Awsten had not had any night terrors since he was sleeping close to Geoff, and he hadn’t suffered with any episodes of sleep paralysis either. He was still having nightmares. They weren’t so often though.
However, tonight was a bad night. Geoff was working late, and he wouldn’t be home until midnight. Awsten begged him to come home and Geoff tried to convince his boss, who declined. Geoff was really sorry and Awsten said it was fine. It wasn’t though really. Awsten didn’t feel okay. He felt nervous and shaky and sick.
He was curled up on the sofa sipping water, a dull, annoying ache in his stomach. He checked the clock on the TV, seeing it was only 11:06pm. He groaned loudly and sighed, shifting a little. He pulled his sweater down over his knees and hands, his eyes feeling heavy. He moved to lay down, curling up. His stomach twisted uncomfortably. A soft whine escaped his lips as he buried his face in the pillows. He pulled the blankets over him and placed his phone on the coffee table and closed his eyes.
Awsten didn’t remember falling asleep, but he must have done. He felt himself being lifted into someone’s arms, and carried somewhere. He might have panicked if he didn’t recognise the other's hold and defined arms. He knew it was Geoff in an instant. He murmured something a little incoherent and slurred, his hands curling in Geoff's work shirt.
The elder carried Awsten to bed and placed him down, kissing his head. “Ssh, baby, sleep.” He whispered.
Awsten mumbled and curled up, falling back to sleep instantly.
Geoff got changed and joined Awsten, spooning him. He fell asleep with him.
Awsten wriggled and squirmed in his sleep, letting out whimpers and whines. Images that didn’t all quite fit together rushed through his head, making him flinch slightly.
The room was completely empty. It was dark, and Awsten couldn’t see anything. He backed up until he hit the wall, sinking down onto the floor. He hugged himself and watched the blackness with wide, scared eyes. He didn’t know where he was. He couldn’t see anything.
He felt something cold and wet around his feet and legs, making him gasp. His eyes had adjusted now, and he could just about make out that the cold wet liquid was water. It was black in colour, ice cold and startling. He jumped up and stumbled a little. He gasped as the water rose higher around his knees.
His heart pounded in his chest, blood rushing in his ears. He felt sick and dizzy and he was about to faint. He was stumbling around, the water soaking him through to the bone. The water was around his hips now, stopping him from falling too fast. He found his way to a wall, and he scrambled to grab onto something. He was crying and screaming, wishing that it would stop. The water was rising up to his neck, and his body was freezing. His fingers and toes were going a pale blue, not that he could tell. He rose up off the floor and swam up, keeping himself above the water.
Suddenly, something was pressing him down. He was forced under the water, swallowing a mouthful. He coughed and choked under the water as he was forced down further. He held his breath, feeling even more sick and dizzy.
It didn’t take long for Awsten to pass out. He was still being pushed down. He hit the floor and the water drained. He coughed hard and threw up water, before falling back down again.
Awsten woke up with a fright, coughing and spluttering. He gripped onto Geoff, shaking him hard. The elder woke up and rubbed Awsten’s back. Awsten was sobbing and he held onto Geoff tightly.
“Baby, what’s wrong? Did you have a bad dream?” he asked softly, kissing his hair. Awsten nodded and curled up closer. His crying quieted down slowly, his face buried against Geoff's chest. He sighed and curled up against him, his arms around his neck. Geoff kissed down along Awsten's hair and neck, calming him down. Awsten didn’t say anything, nothing at all. He closed his eyes and relaxed down against Geoff, falling back to sleep.
It was the first time he had fallen asleep so peacefully. He slept all the way through the night and into the late morning. He truly needed that sleep. He woke up with Geoff petting his hair and every worry and anxiety he had melted away.--
