It was a rainy night, the wind was howling while thunder clapped. I was sitting next to my brother while our Grandfather drove us home. Kaden and I are both 17 and twins, so technically we could have driven home, but with the low visibility, and slippery roads, we agreed to call our Grandfather and ask him to give us a lift. We had been at a party for our friend. It had been fun but had gone much later than I had expected. When I looked at the clock it read 12:45. Exhausted, I leaned my head against the window, letting the coolness spread across my face.

"Tired Lillian?" My Grandpa asked, a grin creeping onto his face.

"Just a little." I said smiling back.

" Oh come on Lilli, you were tired 10 minutes into the party." Kaden flashed his goofy smile in my direction. I opened my mouth trying to come up with a comeback that wasn't too cliche. Coming up with nothing, I closed my mouth and continued to stare at the rain drops pouring down the window. Just then I noticed something strange up ahead of us. A car was coming down the attaching road to our right, way faster than he should be driving considering the rain made it harder to see and it was night. As I sat up to see better, I realized that the car was headed straight for us!

"Grandpa look..." I was cut off by the crunch of metal and squealing tires. The car had smashed into the right side of our car, propelling us into the ditch, and resulting in my head smashing into the side window. I sat back up, but just in time for the same car to slide into us a second time pushing us into a tree.

"Grandpa?! Kaden?!" I shouted panicked. I put my hand to the left side of my face, quickly drawing it back when I felt something warm and sticky. I took in my surroundings taking note of the glass and metal shrapnel everywhere. Just then something in the driver's seat moved. I let out a breath that I had not been aware I was holding.

"You two ok back there?" My grandpa's voice broke the silence, calming me down a bit.

"I think I will be but I'm not sure about Kaden." I leaned over and gently nudged Kaden. No response. I started panicking again, realizing that Kaden had taken the brunt of the crash.

"Grandpa! Something is wrong with Kaden. He isn't moving!" I quickly unbuckled and opened my door, getting out of the car and into the rain. Thunder crashed and the rain came down in sheets. None of that mattered though, because my brother was in trouble. I tried taking a step and then fell to the ground as a searing pain shot through my left leg. I looked down and saw a piece of metal sticking out. Out of anger and fear for my brother's life I ripped it out and continued to make my way to my brother's side of the car. I was drenched and chilled to the bone, but nothing chilled me more than the sight of the car. Nearly the whole right side was torn off, but whatever was still whole was smashed so it looked concave.

"How bad is he?" My Grandpa's voice was full of worry. Snapping into focus I limped over to my brother. I pulled what was left of the door away, and moved closer for a better look. Tears sprang to my eyes, and I choked. Kaden was worse than I had imagined. He was covered in blood, and just by looking at his position I could tell he had 3 or 4 broken bones.

"Kaden?" I spoke softly, tears running down my cheeks. "Kaden?!" I said it louder this time. I reached my hand over and felt for a pulse. Sadness and grief washed over me like a tidal wave, drowning all other thoughts and feelings. Just then I felt something. The faint slow thump of a heart beat.

"He's alive!" I shouted, relief flooding into me. "His heart beat is soft but there!" I shivered realizing how cold and sore I was.

"Lillian, this is very important. My cell phone is not working so I need you to run up to the road and wave down help. Here, take this flashlight." He passed me his emergency flashlight from inside the passenger compartment. "It should help attract attention."

"But Grandpa, nobody is out at this time and I'm not sure how much more time Kaden has." Another sob threatened to claw its way into my throat, but I swallowed it down.

"We have to try, and don't worry, I will keep trying my phone" I turned and looked at the dark road ahead, and started walking. It wasn't very far, but far enough to make me realize the pain in my leg was getting worse as well as the pain in the side of my head. My head started to spin and I couldn't walk straight. I was almost to the road, just a few more feet, but right at that moment I stumbled forward smashing my head on a rock. The next moment everything went black.
