∞ Chapter 5 ∞
I crawled lazily into my brother’s jeep, and sighed after smelling the greasy smell of a McDonald’s cheese burger.
“Well someone looks overwhelmingly happy”
I answered Jay with a moody groan as I slumped my backpack into the back seat.
Today had not gone as planned.
“D’you wanna talk about why you’re so grumpy, or is it just a hormonal teenager thing?”
“I was having a perfectly calm day, too calm – I didn’t even yell at the bus driver for driving the bus before I could sit down!”
“Too calm” Jay agreed.
“But then this hip new guy shows up and he thinks he’s so cool and popular and stuff, and then he completely embarrasses me in front of the whole class! My class! But his hooks are wedged deeply into to all the guys who just want to be his best bud, and all the girls who-“
Before I finish, he cuts me off. “How did he embarrass you?”
“I, um, I mean he! He, he just um, He started some stupid conversation that I couldn’t physically finish!”
“I’m sure he did” he said sarcastically. As he tossed me a greasy cheeseburger.
‘ok so maybe I am stretching the truth a little with the embarrassment but still! There is something strange about that guy!’
‘uh huh.’
“Have you ever thought about the colour blue?”
He doesn’t answer.
“It’s so, god I don’t know. Diminishing? Pacifying? Gloomy?”
“Cat, I love you to death, I honestly do – but for once, just shut up an eat ya’ cheeseburger.”
I smirked, than regrettably bit into my burger. I cringed as I tasted the creamy fat that resided in the cheese.
Despite my brothers’ clear end of the conversation, I still thought of Jason.
His wet hair, the bluish tinge to his thermal energy colour. His knowledge on my name.
Maybe he had been for a recent swim in the ocean, the beach is only a 5 minute walk from our school. Maybe my body heat detection is wearing off, or I’m hallucinating.
Maybe he really did know my name from the class role.
My thoughts came to an abrupt stop as Jay pulled up at our house. It was a tall Queenslander, made out of wooden slabs and a veranda that went around the whole house. I loved it.
I grabbed my backpack and jumped out of the car. Jay went to unlock the door but saw that the door was already open.
Mum was home.
