Vanessa, Marcie and Paige all waited in Miss Nayde’s office. None of them said anything. Paige was beginning to shuffle about, uncomfortably, when Miss Nayde came in. Paige instantly stopped. Miss Nayde just sat at her desk.
“Well, are one of you going to tell me what happened, or am I just going to sit here and waste my precious time? Did you not hear me in the assembly say that we have no time to waste? Well go on then, tell me something!” she yelled. Before Vanessa could say anything, Marcie stepped forward.
“It was my fault. I suggested we play hide and seek. Blue, Vanessa, was just playing under my rules. I’m sorry, Miss Nayde, it’s not their fault. Blame me,” said Marcie. Vanessa was shocked, but she went along with it anyway, because she didn’t want her parents to find out about the naughty stuff. “I’ll replace your vase and flowers, if you give me until this afternoon I can buy some more-”
“Hmmm, it’s okay, you don’t have to replace them, and I would just expect you not to play hide and seek again. You may leave,” the three started heading out the door. “Oh, Victoria?” Marcie turned her head around. “Thank you for taking the blame, but I know what really happened. Vanessa was avoiding pigs, am I correct? You can go now,” How did Miss Nayde know that Vanessa was avoiding pigs? How did she even know about the pigs?
“Blue! Paige! Miss Nayde just told me that she knows you were really avoiding pigs! How did she know that?” said Marcie, quickly. Vanessa’s suspicions were ahead of her now, now she knew there was something different about the head after all...
Vanessa, Marcie and Paige all sat on their beds, thinking. Probably about the psychic Miss Nayde. How did she know that? How could she know about the pig thing in the first place? All this thinking was making Vanessa feel uneasy. So she decided to break the ice,
“Shall I go get the timetables, or what?” asked Vanessa. That was probably the best attempt she had ever done trying to ease the awkwardness.
“If you want to. I’ll go if you don’t wanna,” said Marcie.
“No, I wanna go!” said Paige, who ran out the door.
“So,” said Vanessa.
“So,” said Marcie. Vanessa wanted to say something, so she thought it over four times before saying,
“So, what’s your story?” Vanessa sort of regretted it when Marcie’s head whipped up in an instant.
“You really want to know?” she asked.
“Why not?” asked Vanessa, even more curious now.
“Well, I don’t know where to start. Okay, when I was about three, dad died. I didn’t know what was happening; I just kept asking where he was. About two years after that, mum met another guy. She used to go out with him every night. Six months later, she lost her job. I can remember being in bed hearing them shouting at each other. Why couldn’t he just leave her? I used to think. Eventually, they broke up, and mum lost so much money. We barely had enough money for petrol, so mum sold the car. At least she didn’t have to pay for insurance. When I was six, I started school. I used to get bullied all the time. And then, just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, it did.
