Fallen

Chapter 1

Fallen was shivering violently, the cold had been getting to her. Her skin had been paler than usual and her lips were almost a light blue color. She pulled the thin jacket tighter around herself in an attempt to find some sort of warmth as she proceeded to the grocery store for some food.

Finally reaching the grocery store,Fallen pulled a wad of $50 dollars out of her pocket. Noticing the pricey expenses for food,Fallen's lips fell into an agitated frown. This won't be able to get me as much as I thought,She thought to herself.

Walking out of the store with a sigh,Fallen decided to go back to her place of work to ask for an advance. She knew it was highly unlikely that she was going to receive one but she thought it was worth a shot.

Walking into the old, homey bakery,Lynda's Delicious Baked Goods,Fallen smiled when she saw Lynda, her boss and older friend, wiping down the counters. Fallen walked over and pulled a stool up to the counter and sat in front of Lynda, who had put the rag away and took off her hair cap, exposing her bouncing grey curls.

"Fallen, sweetheart. Don't you tell me you're hear to work second shift. You've been workin' it for five nights straight,go home and get some rest, dear. You need it,"Lynda scolded. She knew about Fallen's financial problems but she also knew about her recent isomnia problem.

She'd help her if she could but she had three grandchildren—who had also lost their parents—to think about. That doesn't change the fact that she tried to help Fallen whenever she had the chance though.

"I know Lynda,I know, but I just needed some food. They just keep bringing the prices in the grocery stores up and the 50 wasn't enough for me to get everything I needed,"Fallen spoke softly,a pleading look in her eyes.

Lynda frowned sadly. She knew about Fallen's home situation also. Fallen was now 22 and living in the same home her parents were killed in when she was five. However, when she was a teenager,it was much worse. She couldn't find a job and the police were starting to get suspicious with her living alone and all but she didn't want to go to an adoption center. Even if she did,Lynda couldn't and wouldn't let her.

"Honey,"Lynda started, disappointed, nodding her head in regret and sadness. Fallen frowned and looked down in embarassment. She couldn't believe she actually thought she could get an advance. Who am I to keep asking her for more money? She thought, disappointed in herself.

"I'm sorry but I can't. You know I have the kids back at home and—" Fallen put a hand up to stop her.

"I'm sorry for asking,Lynda. I had no right to. I know you have your own life to handle." Fallen sighed when she saw Lynda's sad smile. She stood up from her stool and walked around the counter, giving Lynda a friendly hug.

When she pulled away, she sighed again."Well, again,I'm sorry about that. Anyway,I'll be in at 8:00 tomorrow morning. Goodbye."

Lynda simply waved as Fallen walked out of the door, smiling slightly.

Fallen wrapped her arms around herself, bracing herself against the cold. When the small, cozy house came into sight, she smiled slightly. She didn't have a heater, but she did have blankets and a stove. With her regular pay,she was able to keep up with all of her bills, but she was running low on home items. She needed more clothes, food, and more home related items. She needed a lot.
