Will flicked his tail a little more, into the shallow parts of the ocean, but not quite reaching the part where the waves broke. He lifted his head just above the water, just barely letting his chin touch the air.

Will looked around the area. It was a private beach in Montauk, as he knew, but not many humans came. As Will had learned by eavesdropping on the humans' conversations, they could rent the little cabin there.

He saw one kid coming out of the small, wooden structure. Will had only one thought. This boy is hot!

Yes, it was a boy, and Will was gay. If you have a problem with that, why are you even reading these one-shots? Anyway, back to the story.

This boy looked about Will's age. He was wearing all black clothing, none of which Will was familiar with the names of. He looked to be the merman's polar opposite, with long, raven hair and a pale complexion. But dam, was he hot.

The boy began walking to the water, but Will was too mesmerized to think of ducking back underwater. Too late, he realized his mistake.

"Who are you? What are you doing here? This is a private beach!" The kids had approached the edge of the water.

"Um..." Will didn't know how to respond to that. By now, the boy had made his way into the water and was swimming towards Will, who was now frozen with anticipation. The boy reached him and started treading water, as Will had subconsciously moved farther into the water.

"Answer me! I asked you--" Will felt something against his tail. The boy's face looked perplexed and Will felt it again (it's a foot, don't be dirty minded). "What is that?" He dipped his head underwater and Will reflexively jerked back when he felt a hand on his tail.

The boy resurfaced, looking at Will with wide eyes. "What are you?"

"Ha ha, funny story, I'm kind of not human." Will awkwardly put a hand behind his neck.

"Yeah, I got that part." This kid was starting to confuse Will.

"Why aren't you surprised? You don't look the slightest bit in disbelief!"

"I've always believed that other 'mythical' creatures could live on this planet. Other kids call me crazy. I'm Nico, by the way." Nico looked ecstatic to be in the company of a merman.

"Well, I'm Will. If we move closer to shore, I can show you my tail."

"Yes! That sounds awesome!"

Will and Nico swam to the shore and sat in the sand on the beach. Will kept the tip of his tail in the shallow water where it could still be seen. He apparently had to touch water at all times.

Nico stared at the tail in amazement. "This is so cool! Can I touch it?"

The other boy was amused by his fascination, and agreed.

As Nico ran his hand along the tail, Will studied him.

He took in the skinniness, and how his clothes practically hung off his frame.

But his eyes. Nico's eyes were beautiful, the irises so dark that you couldn't tell it from the pupils unless you were really close.

Will didn't realize he was staring until Nico looked up at him. "What?"

Will covered it up with one of the questions he'd been meaning to ask. "What's that?" He pointed to Nico's shirt.

"My shirt? Have you never seen one before?" Nico looked puzzled when Will shook his head.

"All the humans I see on the beach wear what they call 'swim suits'. Why aren't you wearing one?"

"Well, I wasn't actually planning on getting in the water."

"But this thing," Will gestured to Nico's dark jeans. "It can't be comfortable in this hot weather!"

"I don't own shorts," was Nico's short reply.

"Well jokes on you, I don't know what those are!" Nico laughed a melodious, infectious laugh. Soon, both boys were rolling in the sand.

They met up everyday, and Nico told Will more things about the human world, while Will told him of the realm of merpeople. Until the fated day when Nico had to go back to the city.

He complained and complained and complained to his older sister Bianca, who just promised that they'd come back.

"Nico?" Will asked tentatively.

"Yes Will?"

"I like you. Not completely platonically. I want to be more than your friend." Will felt the words tumbling out before he could stop them. He looked up at his new friend, sad that Nico would probably want nothing to do with him.

Instead, Nico smiled. "I thought you'd never say that." They leaned closer to each other, closer and closer until...

"Nico! Where are you? We have to leave!" Bianca not-so-gracefully stumbled onto the beach, just catching a glimpse of yellow hair before it disappeared underwater.

Days passed. Weeks. Months. A year. Will met another human accidentally, but he'd seen this boy before, as he came every year. He wasn't like Nico, unfortunately.

"Will! You look lost in thought. What are you thinking about?"

"Nothing. Just a boy that I met here. He said he'd come back, but it's been over a year." Will said in a somber tone.

"Where does he live?" The other boy sat down and got comfortable.

Will thought for a moment before replying. "I think he mentioned some place called 'Manhattan'?"

"Hey! That's where I live! What's his name, I might know him."

"Nico di Angelo. He said his sister might bring him back. Do you know him?"

The boy looked sad as he looked down. "Oh. Well, the thing is, Bianca's dead. Nico doesn't socialize anymore."

Will was about to ask more questions when he heard someone call: "Percy! Dinner!"

With that, he got up and walked back towards the cabin.

Will never saw Percy Jackson or Nico di Angelo again.
