Chapter 6 - The Alpha's Escape Plan (Part 2)Four Alphas, seven werewolf guards and a human sat down to dinner.
It sounded like the start of a joke, but no one was laughing.
Except me.
I thought it was hilarious.
Tori had just commented on how I had the same name as Blake's dog and asked me how I knew Blaine's family. Everyone in the room held in a collective breath, dreading the next condemning words that were bound to come out of my mouth. Tension was so thick in the air I could actually taste it on my tongue – a sour, bitter thing.
I laughed that much harder, trying to cover it with my hand. And failing.
"Actually, it's kind of a funny story. They kidnapped me and locked me in a cage down in the basement." I answered in all honesty and got a front row seat to Blaine's shocked expression, eyes wide and mouth open.
Not so smooth now, are you? I thought to myself just as Blake sucked in a breath behind me. Chastity squeaked. Someone I didn't know choked on the cup of water he'd been drinking.
I snickered. Hilarious seemed too weak of a word at this point. Do I dare say epic?
Adam, seated at the front of the table, was the first to recover from the initial shock. He cleared his throat, drawing Tori's attention.
"Luna is our guest. She will be staying with us for a while." He smiled. So calm. So collected.
I could fix that.
"Oh, I can't possibly allow you to take me in." I told him in my best imitation of innocence. "I'd hate to impose, and I already have a place to stay."
"It's no opposition." He assured me. "We're honored to have you."
Was I the only one who noticed how his smile was just a little too tight?
Our discussion halted just long enough for a group of werewolves to set dinner plates in front of us. I had to admit the steak looked amazing, cooked exactly as I liked it. Not rare, but close.
Blaine glared at me from over Tori's head, daring me to continue the conversation where we left off.
So of course I obliged. "How did you meet Blaine?" I asked Tori while I began cutting my steak into bite-size pieces. Dodging weary glances, I began entertaining myself by picking peas off my plate and throwing them at an unsuspecting Blaine, who was finding his new favorite hobby in scowling at me.
That's not very attractive. I mouthed to him, knowing he'd hear the words that never really left my lips.
"Hmm?" Tori took a small sip of water, oblivious to the mini war she was directly in the center of. "Oh, we used to be neighbors. I lived next door." She jerked a thumb to indicate a vague direction to our left.
"So the two of you aren't..." I pointed between Blaine and Tori, trying to indicate with hand gestures what I refused to put into words.
Tori laughed out loud, her voice holding a musical note. "Oh, god no. That would be weird. We grew up together."
Huh. Someone else who had immunity to the manslut. A kindred spirit. I knew there was a reason I liked her.
Tori took a bite of mashed potatoes and glanced on either side of her, between me and Blaine. "I have to ask, because you kind of give off that vibe. Did the two of you ever date?"
My mouth literally hit the table, and I don't think I imagined the growl that came from Blake. "Eww, no." I scrunched my face in disgust, horrified. "Perish the thought. The very notion offends me. Why would you even think that?"
