Let It Rain

The rest of the school day, I wondered and worried about Chase. I didn't see him and I still didn't get to make things right. And say what I had to say. I kicked a pebble as I walked out of the school gates. This is just great. I felt so helpless and cruel. Like I was leading Chase on, and I couldn't do anything about it.

"Better hurry home," someone called to me. "Storms coming."

I turned to find James walking the opposite way, "I didn't know."

But he didn't hear me, he was already walking away from me. James, I remember how Cyndi said he was in a 'twisted' love triangle. I felt bad for the guy, both the people he loved wanted each other.

Clouds started to come in, blocking out the sun. There really was a storm coming, and a bad one. I picked up my walking pace a little. A storm, what a lovely event to add to my terrible day so far. I wish I had an umbrella ready.

But I guess a little rain never hurt.

"Eric! Is that you?" my mother yelled as I entered my house. It began to sprinkle a little outside.

"Yeah, it's not a robber," I said as she rushed to me. "What is it?"

Her face was panicked, "It's about Chase! He needs to see you now. He's in trouble."

"Mom, what do you mean? Where is he?" my pulse quickened.

"He, I don't know. He left a voice mail on the home phone. He was crying, I could tell, and he said, 'I need you now more than ever, my life depends on it' and then, I didn't know what to do." she shook her head.

Chase. Where was he? What was happening?

"Mom," I put both my hands on her shoulders. "Where is he? When did he call?"

"He's at some bridge by the old park. and it was about five minutes ago." she replied.

I released my grip. I could feel my face turn pale. The old bridge by the park, that was the Jumper's Bridge. About two years ago, a girl named Melanie jumped. The river's current took her away and they found her body bruised and bloody a mile away.

"Eric?" she asked. She shook me.

"I have to go. Now." I panicked. I grabbed my car keys, and jacket.

"Eric," she called after me.

I stood by the front door, my hand on the doorknob, "What is it?"

"Be careful. Please. It's raining hard." she chocked out. I saw the tears form in her eyes. I rushed to her and gave her a hug and kiss on the forehead.

"I'll be fine. I promise." I nodded, then ran out of the house. The rain was coming down. Hard. I opened the door and hopped in. Quickly, I drove off to Jumper's Bridge. My mind was racing the whole way there. Chase wouldn't do it, right?

He couldn't kill himself. He just couldn't.

I turned on the radio, maybe that would calm me down. A sad, slow song came through the speakers. I guess the universe was out to get me, quickly I turned it off. The rest of the trip was in silence, besides the lightning crashing in the distance.

I hit the brakes, "Holy fuck!"

The car screeched. Chase was actually sitting on the edge of the bridge. He stared down at the raging water beneath his feet. I shut the car off and got out.

"Chase! What in the hell!" I screamed over the wind.

Startled he turned around, "Eric?"

"Yes it's me! What are you doing?!" I yelled again, I approached him cautiously.

"I don't know anymore," he yelled over the storm. "I'm so scarred."

"Then why are you gonna kill yourself!" I replied. I took another step towards him.

He began to stand, "I'm not worth it. I'm tired of living."

"No, don't talk like that, Chase. Ever." I was close enough to him that I could see the hopelessness in his eyes.

"I'm sorry, Eric." he chocked out.

"Chase. . . ."

"Sorry. Just remember, I-I love you." he let the tears come, and it all happened in slow motion. He took a step forward and began to fall. I screamed and grabbed his hand. He dangled over the edge. It felt like time stopped, I could only fell us both slipping off the edge.

He screamed and so did I.

Everything flashed before my eyes. My dad and I playing catch and my mom throwing the football at my dad's face by accident. Eight grade when I kissed Shirley Hansen, and she tried to stick her tongue in my mouth. Freshman year. Football games. Girls. Meeting Chase for the first time. James. Kissing James. And seeing Chase cry.

I never even got to tell him I loved him, I realized as we both splashed into the water. Still holding hands. We wouldn't go down without a fight. I kicked until our heads were above water.

"Chase! We need to get to the side of the river! We have to fight the current!" I yelled over the storm that had gotten worse. Water filled my mouth.

I didn't think he heard, but he replied, "Okay!"

We fought and fought until we reached the side. Where it was safe. I pushed Chase to the rocky land and climbed up after. I panted and laid down. He spit up water. For a moment we just sat there, silent and panting.

"Let's get out of here." he sighed.

"Good idea." I nodded.

We both walked back to my car in silence. We had just cheated death. We both climbed in and I sat there for a few seconds. Chase looked at me.  His glasses were still on, but they had water on the lenses and one side had a small crack.

I took them off, cleaned them, and put them back on his face, "I want you to see this."

"What?" he replied, still dazed.

Instead of answering, I kissed him.
