The telephone rings, cutting through the hum of the machinery of the lab with it's shrill. ringing.
"Hello?" A slightly annoyed voiced picks up the call.
"How's everything inside of the lab?"
The person sighs. "John, like I told you before, literally thirty minutes ago, everything is fine."
On the other end of the line the man paced nervously, one shoe in his hand ready to spring into action if anything were to go awry. "You've checked the levels of all the containers, yes?"
The person on the other line sighs again. "John, in case you've forgotten, we're all microbiologists too." They laugh. "You're not the first and you're not going to be the last. The lab isn't going to descend into chaos without you."
He tried to persuade them not to make him take this break, but they'd said it was mandatory. He had dug himself a trench of of vacation time, and now he's got to pull himself out. He wasn't used to just being a bystander in his work, it only brought new heights to his anxiety. Everything going on with the project was all but hidden to him.
Suddenly alarms start going on in the background.
"What's that?"
"Shit! I'll call you back." The line goes dead.
He smiles, despite his absence, his plan worked, his virus was going international.
