Mavis hummed softly as she sat on her porch step, waiting for Zeref to arrive."Bye, Mavis." Laxus waved to her as he walked across the street.
Mavis smiled and waved back. "Have a good day, Laxus."
She sat on her porch step longer, keeping her patience. As if in a flash, Zeref suddenly appeared in front of her.
"Hello, Mavis." He smiled at her, his heart fluttering slightly.
"Hey, Zeref!" She jumped up and grabbed his hand. "Let's get going!"
Zeref grinned at her cheerful mood. He had always wondered how people didn't like her. She was such a joyous spirit with a wonderful heart.
As the two were walking, they noticed three boys that looked like seniors in front of them. They were arguing about silly matters, and Mavis giggled as she listened to them bicker.
"Will you stop acting like you're better than everyone, Yuri?" One boy asked.
Another boy answered, and Mavis assumed that was Yuri. "Oh, so sorry, Warrod. I couldn't hear your endless complaining over the sound of my epicness!"
The last boy made a face. "Yuri, will you act your age for once?"
Yuri sighed. "Yes, Precht."
They had reached the school, and Zeref and Mavis were waiting for the boys to go in. Suddenly, the boys turned around, seeing Zeref and Mavis walking close behind them.
The three stopped and stared at them. Mavis crossed her arms and made a face. Zeref didn't show any emotions as usual.
"Do you need something?" Mavis asked, slightly annoyed.
"Were you eavesdropping on us?" Yuri got up in her face.
"Wha-"
Yuri picked her up my the collar of her dress. "Don't play dumb, stupid girl. Did you hear all of that?"
Mavis struggled against his grip, and Zeref growled at Yuri. "Let go of her." Zeref hissed.
Yuri smirked. "Yeah? Or what?"
Zeref shot forward at him and kicked Yuri in the stomach, catching Mavis as she fell. Yuri groaned and Precht and Warrod exchanged glances. Zeref turned to the two. "Tell your friend that if he doesn't keep his hands off of Mavis, I'll do worse things than kicking him."
The two nodded. "What are your names?" Warrod asked, crossing his arms with a mysterious grin plastered on his face.
"I'm Mavis!" Mavis squealed happily as Zeref gently set her down on the ground. She thought that maybe they could become her newest friends.
Precht turned to Zeref. "And you?"
"I am Zeref." He replied bluntly.
"You guys seem great. Do you want to eat lunch together later?" Warrod asked.
Yuri got up, clutching his stomach. "Are you guys crazy?! That guy just kicked me in the gut!" Yuri yelled.
Warrod chuckled. "Yeah, that was great."
Yuri groaned, and Precht faced the duo. "We sit at the table farthest in the back. If you have any other friends, feel free to bring them."
Mavis smiled giddily. "Thanks!"
The three boys left, and Mavis and Zeref walked to their first class. Zera waved to the two as they took their seat at their desk.
"Hey, guys!" Zera smiled. Mavis was giggling like a giddy little girl. Zera rose an eyebrow at her. "What's happening, Mavis?"
"New friends!" Mavis cheered.
Zera went pale. "What?"
"Mmhm." Mavis hummed happily. "They invited Zeref and I to eat lunch with them, and they said you could come too!"
"What are their names?" Zera asked.
"Warrod, Precht, and Yuri." Mavis chanted.
Zera froze. "Did you say Yuri?" Mavis nodded, and Zera groaned. "Mavis! You know I hate that kid!"
"So do I." Zeref mumbled remembering the anger he felt when Yuri had picked Mavis up.
"Come on, Zera." Mavis pouted. "Give him a chance!"
"I gave him a chance in middle school, and I'm not giving him another one." Zera huffed.
Mavis sighed and leaned against Zeref. She looked up at him. "You'll sit with us, right?"
Zeref smiled at her. "Of course, Mavis Vermillion."
"Yay!" Mavis said excitedly.
After three more periods had passed, Zeref and Mavis headed to lunch together. After grabbing their cafeteria lunches, Mavis led Zeref to the very back table. Warrod waved them over. Yuri sat with his arms crossed, not looking up.
"Hey, Warrod, Precht, Yuri!" Mavis chirped.
"Hello, Mavis and Zeref." Precht smiled. "Sit wherever."
Mavis plopped down next to Warrod, and Zeref silently took a seat next to her.
"So," Warrod started as he took a bite of his sandwich, "Are you two dating or something?"
Mavis and Zeref both blossomed a bright red. "Do not be silly. We're just friends." Zeref stated.
"Best friends." Mavis added, leaning against Zeref as she had earlier that day.
Zeref smiled unknowingly. He had a strange feeling bursting inside of him. Warrod chuckled. "Well, I hope we can be friends too."
Mavis squealed with joy. "Yay! That would be amazing!"
Zeref nodded. The bell rang, and they all had to head to class. Mavis skipped down the hall, Zeref following quietly. Suddenly, Mavis was stopped abruptly from her cheery skip.
"What do we have here?" Clara Hartman questioned while smirking. "It's Mavis acting all dorky!"
Mavis' smile disappeared, and Zeref's heart cracked slightly. "What do you want, Clara?" Mavis asked quietly.
"I want you to get out of my way before I put my foot through your stupid face." Clara pushed her roughly.
Mavis grunted and fell back. Instead of hitting the hard ground, though, Zeref had caught her. Mavis smiled softly at him. "Thanks."
Clara was disgusted. "Oh, you have a little boyfriend now, Mavis? I don't see why you're dating her, Zeref. Are you doing it out of pity?" Clara cackled.
Mavis huffed. "We're not dating."
"Excuse me, Mavis." Zeref set her down so she was standing on the ground once more like he had done earlier that day.
Zeref walked over to Clara. His face was dark, and you could feel the hatred radiating off of him. Clara scoffed at him. "Oh, are you angry, Zeref? Are you angry because I picked on your weak, little girlfriend?"
Zeref socked her in the stomach.
"Never call Mavis weak."
