George's P.O.V
"So what's changed?" I asked once we had gotten our food. I settled for a Big Mac, and Clary had a Happy Meal with a McFlurry.
"Nothing much. My Dad's really busy at work still and Daniel has recently moved to Scotland." She told me as she dunked a chip in tomato sauce.
"And your Mum?" I hated myself for asking, to see her flinch, but Mrs Davies has always been a part of my life right up until the accident.
"She's still the same," she murmured and looked at me, trying to smile and fight back tears.
When me and Clary were twelve years old, Mrs Davies was involved in a car accident on her way home from dropping Clary off at school. Nobody died, but Mrs Davies was left in a coma. And she still is in one.
I remember that day - the 6th June, a rather bleak and misty day. I remember holding Clary's hand when nobody came to pick us up, because I was going to Clary's that day because it was a Thursday. I remember waiting in the office for her Mum to pick her up. After an hour, my Mum came rushing in and picked us up. I remember the smudged mascara under her eyes and her paleness. She took us straight to the hospital without a word, even though we asked why. When Clary saw her mother lying on the bed, to her father who sat crumpled at her side, she collapsed onto the floor and cried.
"So, how's the music?"
"It's great, I love it. And my bandmates." I laughed, gratified for the change of topic.
"They all seem really nice," Clary said and my heart soared. If she likes them - and they obviously like her - than that means she'll stick around, right?
"You're already part of the APA Group."
"The what group?" Clary burst out laughing.
"The Awesome People of Awesomeness."
"You're such a dork," she said affectionately. I ruffled my hair and smiled devishly at her.
"So what are you-" I started to say, but I was broke off by a girl who appeared at my side.
"Oh my God, can I please have a picture taken with you?" The girl - a tall, beanie wearing girl - gasped and took out her phone. Before I could say anything, I smiled as she snapped the picture. "Thank you so much!"
"It's a pleasure. Anything for a JCat," I said, winking. I think she was about to faint. Clary snorted under her breath and took out her iPhone.
"I-I-I have to go, but I'm going to see you at the doll signing in Hamley's! Goodbye, I love you so much!" She said and gave me a slip of paper with her Twitter name on it.
"Bye," I waved and returned my gaze back to Clary, who was tapping on her iPhone with a quizzical frown. "What's up?"
"It's my, er, boyfriend, Justin. He wants to make plans for tonight," she told me, flushing a deep red.
I felt my heart drop down to my stomach.
Clary Davies had a boyfriend? And she hadn't told me about him straight away? H-how? Why? I had pictured she'll fall in love with... well, me.
Stop that, George. Clary is my best friend and I love her. Friend wise.
But I also love her in the way the sight of her makes my heart speed up. A warmth radiates through me at her touch.
I was in love - and I suspect I have been for years - with Clary Davies.
"Oh, are you going to go out tonight?" I made myself ask, hoping my voice didn't sound too weak or horse.
"No - I'm spending time with you tonight." She told me, and I smiled happily. At least she still wanted me. As she put her phone down, I got a glimpse of her lock screen. It was of her in a red dress and a boy, a handsome boy, in a black tux with a red hankerchief in the pocket. This would have been at the party my old Uni threw every year.
I should have been that guy.
An unquestionable flicker of rage passed through me for the boy, for Justin.
"Good - we can watch Rambo." I laughed and threw a chip at her. It landed in her ice cream.
"Woah Shelley, you too far," she warned and balanced the cream coated chip on her spoon and pulled back.
Even though I was clumsy, so was Clary. So she managed to send the chip backward and it landed in someone's Coke. A scream arised.
"I think it's time to go," I mumbled and grabbed Clary, who then grabbed her ice cream and phone.
"Let's goooooo," she nodded and we ran out of MacDonalds.
