Evander's walk home from school wasn't pleasant. All he did was think of what his parents were going to say about the incident at school. He thought about stalling and stopping by the river first but Lace wasn't going to be there with him because his dad wanted him to go straight home after school. So Evander decided to do the same.
He remembered Mrs. Laney saying that she would call his house later, so he was hoping she hadn't called yet. That way he could tell his parents before they got the news from her, letting them know the accusation was a lie. Then they wouldn't be as surprised, therefore not being as upset either. But he had to try and get home before Mrs. Laney called.
When he got to his house he dashed across his yard and hopped on the porch, hurriedly putting his key into the lock and turning it. When he swung the door open he found his dad on the couch flipping through channels on the TV. He glanced up at Evander then instantly his expression grew vehement. Evander stared back nervously, closing the door behind him. He didn't see Mrs. Slain yet.
"Hey boy," Mr. Slain says, his face growing more disappointed, "Take those boots off."
Evander slips off his boots and runs upstairs. When he got to his room and opened the door he gasped. There he saw Mrs. Slain lying across his bed with her arms and legs crossed. She didn't look happy. She look pissed, he thought.
"Yo principal called us earlier. She said something about you stealin' some money from Betty," she says, "now let me tell you somethin' Evan, if you took it - give it back! Cuz' I don't want no bigger problems or mess over this."
"It wasn't me. This is just another one of Betty's dumb stunts again," Evander says, "I didn't even know she had money!"
"Why would she lie about something like this? About that much money? Now I know you and Betty have had many troubles in the past, but I don't think she'd get this risky. The principal said it was a hundred dollars that girl had. And if she doesn't get it back, either you or we have to pay it back," Mrs. Slain says,"You think we make make money to pay for stupid stuff like this? Hell no!"
"Ma' come on, I didn't even take nothin', I'm telling you this is just a big lie!" Evander exclaims.
Mrs. Slain's face grew more serious.
"Evan. Your pick was in her locker. You came down last night and said that you left it at school! I'm go' tell you somethin' else, me or Travis ain't paying for this.....you are!" She says.
Evander's eyes widened then his jaws dropped.
"I'm tellin' you I did not do this! Where am I supposed to get a hundred dollars from?" Evander asked.
"Well when Travis heard about this he also said that you should get yourself out of this situation you put yourself in. So he suggested that you go and work at Natural Antiques til' you able to pay the money back. Since they runnin' out of more workers as each day pass by, it was easy to get you a spot. Travis already called up there and got you a position. You just chop wood for a few hours everyday then you come back home," Mrs. Slain explained
"What? Chop wood? I don't wanna chop wood!" Evander complained.
"You do if you wanna be in school for the rest of the year. You doin' it whether you want to or not, because remember YOU the reason why you even in this mess in the first place." Mrs. Slain says, pointing a finger at him. She hopped off his bed and came walking past him as his eyes followed her.
As soon as she leaves the room and heads downstairs, Evander angrily punches the air and loudly whispers, "Damn!"
When Mrs. Slain gets downstairs she sees that Mr. Slain still has that disappointed expression on his face. He'd been listening to Mrs. Slain yell at Evander upstairs the whole time, but he couldn't hear everything Evander said.
