Prologue: Fate is Cruel

I wish my skin were dark, like the royals and nobles. Then I would be accepted into the world by others. Instead, I'm called a freak of nature. I have pale skin, a sign of lowly lifestyle, but my eyes are silver, a trait which only the royalty have. My hair is brown, and I have a few freckles splattered on my face. I cover my eyes with my hair, which reaches my waist.
A week has passed since my lonesome sixteenth birthday. I have no friends, so I did not invite anyone over. I live with my father, my mother left when I was but a year old. She had told my father that I was a curse, to have silver eyes with light skin. My father raised me with compassion and care none the less, and it was he who gave me my name: Calista Sarette 'the most beautiful princess'.
We have little to call our own, but we are happy.
The others my age just laugh and say my that my father was delusional when he named me, but they never see my eyes. The last people who did, said I was a witch, a monster, or a demon. That is why I hide them, it is also why I don't have a tutor.
The poor get free tutors, but my father teaches me. He fears that someone will try to take me away from him, kill me, or throw me in a prison cell.
But my only problem is that every year, all sixteen year olds have to line up outside the palace, and the royal family -normally the king- designates a job for each individual. Sometimes the ceremony lasts up to three days. I am to participate this year, and I must show my face. My plan is to either close my eyes, or stare at the ground. Anything to avoid eye contact, because this year is different from previous years. The royal family is letting their daughter -who's also turned sixteen two months ago- decide the jobs for the people. On top of that, the princess will be choosing her personal maid from the crowds.
It's a dream for everyone, everyone except me. I don't want to be near the royal family, as I would be ridiculed for my eye colour.
But fate is far crueler than simply placing me near the royal family. No, fate, I am sure, is far worse than the devil himself.

Heya readers! Hope you enjoyed the prologue of this story.
It's just a bit of it for now, and I'm working on writing more soon, cause even I'm excited for you to know how fate could possibly be crueler!
I have the basic plot down, but now I just need to have a bit of fun...
hehehe.

All the best for my amazing readers!
