I stared hard at the brightly lit display cases in the lobby. A tour group crowds around the glass, blocking my view. So i stood on my tiptoes. Under the pinkish halogen light, I can see the ancient, bandaged mummy lying in a beautiful, Gold rimmed wooden box. It's the first mummy I've ever seen.
A king from more than four thousand years ago.
A dead person.
Something about it gives me the creeps though.
Something does not seem right.
The tour guide moves away, and the lobby clears.
'Come on' squeals Suzie pulling me towards the mummy's case. A strange chill runs down my spine when I get close to it.
I gazed at the mummy's face and shuddered. It's hideous. Part of the face was still wrapped but the other part of it is totally exposed. I see the dry, leathery skin stretched tightly over its shrunken, bony nose. I started to back away but I tripped over something. Glancing to see what I tripped on I softly cry out 'hey - look' but like anyone would even be paying attention.
Suzie has let go of my hand and is pressing her face against the glass of the mummy display.
No one has seen what I found on the ground so I quickly pick it up. It's a small clump of folded pages tied together at the end with dried grass. It looks like some kind of ancient book.
Carefully opening it I peer at the squiggly markings on the page. To my surprise I recognise the words but I wish I couldn't after reading what it says.
