I stopped in front of the library near an intersection. My phone buzzed and a message appeared saying that Zach was almost there. I sighed.
Am I being selfish? Was it okay for me to storm off like that and tell him we were over? Was I overreacting?
I shook my head.
Doesn't matter now anyways. I'm going to talk to him and we'll figure it out.
I hear someone call out my name. I look up and see Zach on the other side of the busy street. He waves. I give a small smile and the crosswalk sign turns green. He quickly runs towards me, but I hear a honk. We both look over at the car coming directly at him.
I scream his name.
Tires screeching. People yelling. And a fallen body.
I run towards him. Tears falling down my face. As I reached him, I saw blood. So much blood. Nothing seemed broken, but the blood running from his head made me think otherwise. I quickly took out my phone and dialed 911.
He opens his eyes slowly and looks at me.
"Zach" I sobbed.
He painfully reached for my hand, "What happened?"
"You're almost dying! That's what happened," I sniffled, more tears streaming down my face.
I hear the ambulance siren coming towards us.
"You're going to the hospital now and you're going to be just fine. Okay?" I clutched his hand.
He groaned, "My head."
"Yes. I know. The ambulance is here and they're going to take you. Alright?"
I was told to step aside. They lifted him up onto a gurney. I was about to enter the ambulance when one of them stopped me.
"Are you his guardian?"
"No, but I-"
"Sorry ma'am, but you can't enter. Got to be a guardian or parent."
As he was closing the doors, I see Zach craning his neck to see me.
He mouths "I love you"
The ambulance took off.
"I love you too"
